Canadian Scott Hargrove Sweeps Pro Mazda Double Header At Inaugural Grand Prix Of Indianapolis

Scott Hargrove came to the inaugural Grand Prix of Indianapolis weekend 44 points behind in the 2014 Pro Mazda Championship (a maximum of 32 points are available for each race). During two days of practice Wednesday and Thursday, Scott topped the time sheets in almost every session. In qualifying Friday morning, Scott put the Mazdaspeed/RaceEnergy/Analytic Systems/Metal Action Machining car in 2nd place for both Friday and Saturday's races.

Friday's race took place in a gap between rainstorms on a damp and drying track making setup of the car very tricky for Scott and his engineer. However they made the right choices and Scott took command right at the green flag, jumping immediately into the lead.

A small mistake after the first of several full course yellows dropped Scott to 2nd, but a determined charge into turn 1 after the final full course yellow saw him regain the lead and then drive away from the field to a commanding 5 second victory with the bonus point for fastest lap.

Conditions were perfect for Saturday's race and Scott again took the lead right at the start, and despite a number of full course cautions, was never seriously challenged, leading every lap and setting the fastest lap for maximum points.

Scott's success, combined with problems for the points leader saw the points gap shrink to only 5 by the end of the weekend.

After Saturday's race win, Scott commented on what it’s like to win at Indy: "The second win in 2 days, it’s so special for me, just a phenomenal feeling to come down that front straightaway to take the checkered flag. Hopefully we’ll be back here is a couple of years and do it the other way on the oval." Hargrove's next Pro Mazda Championship race is the oval race at Lucas Oil Raceway for the traditional ‘Night Before the 500’ on May 24th.
