International GT Supercars Return To Brands Hatch This Weekend

This weekend (17/18 May) Brands Hatch hosts the Blancpain GT Series on the full Grand Prix circuit, the first time since 1996 that a top level international sportscar series will visit the Kent venue. The grid of impressive GT machinery has been extended for this round with 22 cars representing seven supercar manufacturers.

The field will include the Audi R8, BMW Z4, Ferrari 458, Lamborghini Gallardo, McLaren 12C, Mercedes SLS AMG and Porsche 911. The teams will participate in two one-hour races featuring pitstops for the second round of the Blancpain Sprint Series, formerly known as the FIA GT Series. The opening event took place at the Nogaro circuit in France, and Brands Hatch is considered to have similar characteristics for the teams, with its combination of challenging corners and the long back straight testing top speeds.

The opening round showed that the field is very close, making it tough to predict a winner this weekend. The Belgian Audi Club Team WRT pairing of Cesar Ramos and Laurens Vanthoor won the first race of the season, but the car was involved in an incident before the second encounter had even started, handing victory to the Mercedes SLS of HTP Motorsport duo Maximilian Götz and Maximilian Buhk.

Ahead of the weekend Vanthoor remarked: “I don’t know the circuit that well – I have only driven on the Indy circuit with an F3 car – but based on my simulator sessions I gather this track should suit our Audi well. The Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit has a challenging layout and a driver willing to push the limits will surely make the difference here.”

Meanwhile FIA GT Series race winner Stefan Rosina joins forces with ex-F1 driver Tomas Enge in the Reiter Engineering Lamborghini and he is one of several drivers able to draw on Formula 1 experience. Markus Winklehock, who famously led the 2007 European Grand Prix in unfancied machinery, will compete in an Audi, whilst Andrea Montermini and Giorgio Pantano also competed in Grands Prix.

Meanwhile British hopes lie with the Porsche 997 GT3R of Farnbacher Racing, which will be handled by GT ace Nick Tandy. He will be one of four home favourites, with category specialist Ben Hetherington, rising star Daniel Lloyd and London’s Alessandro Latif, who will take part in his first race in the UK this weekend.

Also expected to receive a cheer from the crowd will be Brands Hatch hero Alex Zanardi. He returns to the venue where he took two Gold Medals at the London Paralympics, winning both the road race and the time trial in the H4 handbike competition. The Italian, who was heading for a points finish in Nogaro until a clutch problem on his ROAL Motorsport BMW dropped him to 13th, will be eager to do well on the track that has brought him so much joy in the past.

The Blancpain GT Series will be supported by the BRDC Formula 4 Championship, GT Cup and Radical European Masters, whilst the world’s largest portable LED screen will be showing all of the raceday action. Spectators can also enjoy a free pitwalk on the Sunday, a supercar display, go-karting, fun fair and free children’s adventure playground.
