Local Drivers Join V8 Ute Grid For Barbagallo Battleground

Two more drivers will add firepower to the local force that will hit Barbagallo Raceway this weekend for Round 2 of the Australian V8 Ute Racing Series, Travis Sharpe and Clint Harvey will join fellow West Aussies, Rhys McNally, Adam Marjoram, Rick Gill and Matt Nolan in the 32 ute line-up.

Sharpe was a contender in the 2012 Series, debuted at the 2012 Clipsal 500, backed up again at his home track in Perth, however boasted his best result at the 2012 Tasmanian Challenge, claiming 14th overall for the round.

He will steer the #42 Holden driven by Adrian Cottrell at Round 1 in Adelaide. Hailing from Albany; the 23year old now resides in Perth and after claiming second overall in the Saloon category of the Shannon’s Nationals is feeling confident coming into the Round.

“The last time we raced in 2012 (Perth) we got caught up in a big incident in Race 2, so I’m more excited than ever to get behind the wheel of another Ute in front of the home crowd and I think I have a good chance to get in the top ten for the weekend. Thanks to Wayne (Williams) from WRT (Williams Race Tech), for the opportunity and all my sponsors, Toolmart, Brikmakers and Market City Tavern and QVEE,” said Sharpe.

Harvey, a Perth abrasive blasting and protective coatings owner, hasn’t driven a V8 Ute since Bathurst in 2008, where he claimed 8th overall for the round. He also drove on his home-track that same year, where he placed 4th. Harvey last raced a Porsche in Barcelona last year.

“I’m really looking forward to driving - the opportunity came up at the right time, I was getting a bit of an itch and everything fell into place. I haven’t even seen the car yet but it’s pretty much the same as the last time I raced in the Utes. My goal this weekend is to finish, I’m not there to make up numbers. All of the family will be out there over the weekend so I should have a few fans being a local event,” explained Harvey.

Although Nolan is mostly based on the Gold Coast, he calls WA his second home, with work commitments heavily based in the northern region of the State. He will have a lot of local friends and supporters at the track over the weekend.

“I’m really looking forward to getting to Perth; it's like a second home to me. I tend to spend more time in WA than I actually do in Queensland, so it will be good to race in front of an unofficial home crowd. I know myself that I will need to be on my game with the local support trackside,” Nolan concluded.

Adam Marjoram is taking full advantage of his home-track opportunity and will be spending some time with kids at the Princess Margaret Children’s Hospital this week, before taking some lucky local Go Kart racers around the track on Thursday for a tour of the Erebus Racing V8 Supercar and V8 Ute Pits.

“I’m feeling really comfortable, I’ve got a lot of fans and support here and obviously everyone wishing you well is more support than pressure. It’s good to do some promo work, especially at the hospital; it takes the focus off the pre-round pressure.

Rick Gill will return to the field for the first time since Darwin 2012, and will steer Danny Buzadzic’s Ford FG that was driven by two-time V8 Ute Champion Grant Johnson at the Clipsal 500. Johnson will step into the role of Driver standards Advisor for the Round.

Rhys McNally will be aiming for another podium finish in-front of his home crowd (3rd 2013), in his Stratco Holden.

Round 2 will kick off this Friday with two practice sessions followed by the return of the 3 tier Formula 1 style qualifying session; Race 1 will be televised as live on 7Mate and Race with be 3 live on Network Seven.
