2014 NHRA: Spencer Massey NHRA Southern Nationals Qualifying Report: No. 10

Spencer Massey and the Battery Extender Powered by Schumacher team were hoping to improve their qualifying performance this weekend at the 34th annual NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway.

But the team led by crew chiefs Phil Shuler and Todd Okuhara were unable to make a pass during Friday's second session after their Don Schumacher Racing teammate Antron Brown lost control of his Matco Tools Dragster after an explosion. Brown was uninjured in the accident but NHRA officials called the event due to deteriorating conditions.

"We didn't get to make our run last night in the second session and you really hate to miss an opportunity to make a run and get data but we understood NHRA's decision and we are just really thankful that Antron walked away and was fine," Spencer said.

On Saturday under uncharacteristically cool conditions near Atlanta, Massey posted a 3.844-second pass at only 285 mph in the third qualifying session after rain showers delayed the first session nearly three hours.

"The car just wore through the clutch," he said. "It was on a good run but we might have just been pushing it a little too much there. We made a good run yesterday out of the box and we'll be ready for Sunday."

The Battery Extender team had another opportunity to improve in the fourth and final session Saturday evening but were unable to make a full 1,000-foot pass in the second session on Saturday.

"The conditions were great and we were just going for it," he said, "you have to out here. The fields were tough and there were some good numbers out there. Phil and Todd will go over everything and get ready for tomorrow."
Sunday's weather forecast calls for a high of 64 degrees with periods of rain.

"It's awfully cold out here this weekend and tomorrow looks that way too for race day so we'll just see. It's been a tough weekend out here for everyone.
My guys have worked late nights and we'll be ready for Sunday. Also, hat's off to NHRA's Safety Safari that has been working really hard all weekend. "
