2014 Iowa: Chase Pistone NASCAR Nationwide Race Recap

Chase Pistone made his first-career start with Turner Scott Motorsports (TSM) this weekend in the NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) at Iowa Speedway. The No. 31 TSM team had four practices sessions to get Pistone comfortable with his Chevrolet heading into the Get to Know Newton 250. The practice sessions proved useful, as this weekend marked the first time Pistone has competed in the NNS since 2006. The time on track helped Pistone when it came time for knockout qualifying, as Pistone advanced to the final round, ultimately resulting in a 12th-place starting position for Sunday's race.

Misfortune struck the No. 31 TSM team, however, as a cracked fitting forced the 30-year-old to begin the Get to Know Newton 250 from the rear of the field. When the race began, Pistone showed quickly that the morning's adversity wasn't going to affect his on-track performance. Pistone was able to gain multiple positions from the drop of the green flag and worked his way up to 25th by lap 15. The 30-year-old continued to work his way through the field, and was scored in 17th at lap 70. When the second caution flew on lap 106, Pistone radioed crew chief Pat Tryson to say his No. 31 machine was still loose. The No. 31 TSM team continued to make adjustments that helped Pistone's march through the field, as he moved into the top 15 by lap 147. Pistone maintained his position, and when the caution flag again waived with 25 laps to go, Tryson decided to leave the No. 31 on track. Pistone held strong in the race's closing laps, bringing home a 14th-place finish in his return to NNS racing.

Chase Pistone on his 14th-place finish at Iowa:
"I can't begin to thank Turner Scott Motorsports enough for this opportunity. The guys back at the shop built me a really fast racecar, and the crew did a great job tuning on it all weekend to allow us to run up inside the top 15. I was a little disappointed when I found out we had to start from the rear of the field, but I'm glad it didn't affect our overall outcome. It felt really great to get back into a NASCAR Nationwide Series car, and I hope to come back soon and improve upon our first time out."
