2014 NHRA: Confidence Is Soaring After Brogdon Enjoys Solid Weekend In Atlanta

The confidence of ProtectTheHarvest.com Pro Stock driver Rodger Brogdon is growing after a successful weekend at the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway.

Brogdon scored his first round-win in 22 races Monday, following a No. 5 qualifying effort that put him among Pro Stock's elite. A second-round defeat to Jason Line was disappointing, but Brogdon's smile is still wide.

"We did have a good weekend," Brogdon said. "We struggled for so long, but we finally had something we felt we could win with. To lose it like that, it spoils it some. If that doesn't bother, you better quit, but it's a good thing that it stings like that."

As competitive as the class is these days, having a competitive race car is essential to success, and using an engine from Pro Stock powerhouse Elite Motorsports, Brogdon sped to the top half of the Pro Stock field in qualifying.

That boosted his confidence going into Monday -- after rain and poor track conditions postponed eliminations one day -- and it showed on the Christmas Tree.

Brogdon grabbed a big advantage on the Christmas Tree in his first-round race with Vieri Gaines, and he parlayed that into the round-win. He then left on past Pro Stock champion Jason Line in the second round but shook the tires and was forced to abort the run.

Still, Brogdon's confidence remains high.

"We've got the right attitude again," Brogdon said. "We all believe we can win a bunch of rounds and win a race again. We're looking forward to Topeka (Kan.)."

Brogdon's reaction time against Gaines was .047-second, getting him a .074-second advantage, and he made a solid pass of 6.563 seconds at 210.50 mph while Gaines slowed to a 15.212 at 59.71 mph.

Brogdon then ripped off a .014 light against Line, but the advantage quickly disappeared as Line ran away to a 6.547 at 211.93 mph. Brogdon's official time was 23.484 at 31.98 mph, but he was already looking ahead to this weekend's race at Heartland Park Topeka.

"We've got to figure out what happened right then," Brogdon said of the E2 run. "But I know my guys will figure it out and we'll be ready for next weekend."
