Fontes, Forne Leading Radical European Masters

After the second meeting of the Radical European Masters, Toni Forné and Álvaro Fontes lead among SR3 contenders in the European series with the car entered by Speed Factory Racing, the team managed by Dalius Steponavicius. They finished fourth twice at Brands Hatch and, despite a puncture when they were battling for win in race two, it was a positive record.

Álvaro Fontes and Toni Forné, Spanish duo taking part in the Radical European Masters, had a rewarding weekend at Brands Hatch for their title chances later this year. In the United Kingdom, in spite of they could not climb the podium in any of the races, they both took the lead in the overall classification.

After posting a lap time of 1:27.885 in the free practice session taking place on Saturday morning, they improved their times for qualifying sessions in the afternoon. In Q1 Fontes clocked a best lap of 1:27.121 – 4th fastest among SR3 cars- and Forné, proving how close their lap times are always, set a time of 1:27.759 - 3rd SR3 car on the starting grid-. Race one, on Sunday, was extremely difficult as they had to overtake several slower drivers and, at the same time, battle experienced British drivers. Nevertheless they finished fourth and it was a good result to approach race two, two hours later. Forné overtook a rival to move up another spot. When he was battling for the lead, a safety car ruined his gap and then a puncture when Fontes was at the wheel of the car left them 4th again.

“It was a new track for us and in addition Brands Hatch is a very demanding one. Luckily last weekend was accompanied by good weather. But we had just a free practice session, consisting of 45 minutes, to equal British drivers´ performances”, Forné explains, pointing out “the track has an undulating surface and third sector didn´t help us either but, anyway, we had a competitive car for the races. In race one slower drivers were an additional difficulty to pass and we preferred to finish 4th but not damaging the car for race two, even when we weren´t happy at all. Race two was ruined by two different reasons, a safety car and later a puncture when Álvaro was driving. We were fourth once again. But we lead the championship classification!”.

On his side Fontes said: “such bad luck! We were prevented of winning in race two. But we were competitive enough facing British drivers at home and debuting at this track. The most important thing is that now we are leading the series. Now we have to defend our lead in Hungary, where next two races take place in July”.
