2014 NHRA: NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series Countdown To The Championship Newsletter

Robert Hight raced to his third straight Funny Car victory and fourth overall this season at the rain-delayed Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway. Hight’s Auto Club Ford Mustang defeated John Force Racing teammate Courtney Force with a 4.049-second pass at 315.05 mph.

"We’ve just got to take it one run at a time," said Hight, who won his 33rd career event. "It’s a total team effort." Hight increased his points lead over second place John Force to 206 points.

Courtney Force was looking for her fourth career Funny Car victory and narrowly missed out on securing the 100th win by a female driver in NHRA history. She now sits tied for seventh in the points.

Spencer Massey scored his 15th career victory in a pedalfest win over Doug Kalitta. Massey’s Battery Extender powered by Schumacher Electric dragster posted a 4.269 pass at 245.85 that was good enough to get his first victory of the season and first at Atlanta Dragway.

"It wasn’t pretty," said Massey, who rose to fifth in the Top Fuel points. "There was a lot of smoke, a lot of fire, a lot of oil, but it is what it is." With his runner-up finish, Kalitta returns to the top of the Top Fuel point standings. He has one win on the season (Gainesville) and leads Antron Brown by seven markers. Reigning Pro Stock world champ Jeg Coughlin won his first race of the season following a 6.558 run at 211.63, defeating rival Greg Anderson.

"We made some good calls," Coughlin said of his team, which has struggled this season. "It was great to get our first win of the season." Coughlin’s JEGS.com/ Mopar Dodge Dart moved to fifth in the Pro Stock points. Despite falling to Coughlin in the second round, Erica Enders-Stevens extended her points lead over second place Jason Line.

In Pro Stock Motorcycle, Eddie Krawiec raced to victory over teammate Andrew Hines with a performance of 6.806 at 245.85 on his Screamin’ Eagle Harley-Davidson.

With the win, Krawiec moved to second in the points, 10 behind Hines, who won the NHRA Four-Wide Nationals in Charlotte, N.C. last month
