Rookie James Davison Gets Comfortable In Final Practice Before Indianapolis 500

He didn't get as many laps as hoped, but James Davison is comfortable in the No. 33 KV Racing Technology/Always Evolving Racing Chevrolet/Dallara/Firestone car heading into his first Indianapolis 500. In today's traditional one-hour Carburetion Day practice, Davison was limited to 24 laps yet still posted a best lap of 223.947 mph to rank 22nd of the 33 drivers.

Now the car and driver sit idle until the "Greatest Spectacle in Racing" takes place Sunday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Davison is ready.

"I feel more confident than I did Monday (after the previous practice), going into the race," Davison said following today's session. "With that said, we had our session cut short 20 minutes with a starter issue. That precluded us from making further headway on our car setup for the race. We're in a better position than we were on Monday, so that's good for me to rest on. My goal is a top 15 (finish in the race). It's my rookie race, I haven't raced on an oval in five years and I'm the shortest program of the month. As the race goes on, I'm going to learn more and gain more confidence with that, and hopefully a little more speed."

Davison, who starts 28th in the race, is one of four KV Racing Technology drivers at Indianapolis. He joins Sebastien Bourdais (No. 11 Hydoxycut/Mistic E-Cigs - KVSH Racing Chevrolet/Dallara/Firestone, who qualified 17th), Townsend Bell (No. 6 Robert Graham - KV Racing Technology Chevrolet/Dallara/Firestone, qualified 25th) and Sebastian Saavedra (No. 17 KV AFS Racing Chevrolet/Dallara/Firestone, qualified 32nd) on the defending Indianapolis 500 champion team.

Before today's practice, Davison was honored to unveil a new decal on the car honoring legendary Australian racer and innovator Sir Jack Brabham, who died last weekend. Brabham introduced the rear-engine race car to the Indianapolis 500 and raced with Davison's grandfather, Lex. The Davison and Brabham grandsons, James and Indy Lights driver Matthew Brabham, debuted the commemorative decal together in Gasoline Alley.

"It's a fantastic honor as a fellow Australian driver competing in the Indy 500," Davison said. "Jack really revolutionized technology here, introducing the rear engine era in 1961 with his own design. To pay tribute to him here on this side of the pond in Indianapolis is the biggest and best tribute possible."

The 98th Indianapolis 500 airs Sunday on ABC, the IMS Radio Network, Sirius 213, XM 209 and at www.indycar.com beginning at 11 a.m. ET Sunday, May 25.
