2014 Charlotte (Coca Cola 600): NASCAR Sprint Cup Starting Line-Up & Race Preview

By Mike Sulka

The NASCAR Sprint Cup series will run the 55th Annual Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway this evening to complete a great day of racing which includes Formula One F1's Monaco Grand Prix GP and IndyCar's Indianapolis Indy 500. In all, 110 races have been run at the track built in 1959. Charlotte is a 1.5-mile quad-shaped oval with 24 degree banking in the turns and 5 degrees on the straights. The front stretch kink is a very long 1,980 feet, while the backstretch is a bit shorter at 1,500 feet. If NASCAR fans take advantage of the free parking and fill every seat, there will be 165,000 in attendance this evening.

The first NASCAR Sprint Cup race - World 600 - at Charlotte Motor Speedway had 60 cars and was won by Joe Lee Johnson in his '60 Chevrolet.

You can't over look the fact that Charlotte Motor Speedway may be the house that 5-time NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson built. Others have had more success over the recent races, but Johnson has won at Charlotte six times - including the 'Chase' race in 2009, and will start today from Pole. Plus, he has finished second twice. But in the last six Cup races, Johnson has a third and a fourth place credit on his record.

Looking at recent history there are two drivers that have stood out at Charlotte, Kyle Busch and Kasey Kahne who each have four top-five finishes over the last six events. Over the last six races at Charlotte Busch is the only driver with five top-five finishes. Denny Hamlin has the second best results with three top-five finishes.

And while Busch might be a good pick for the win, he's never won in 20 tries. Hamlin has similar numbers. However, Kahne did pick-up a victory in the 2012 600-miler.

So where this is really headed is that Charlotte is one of those unpredictable races. Over the last 10 races, the track has produced nine different winners. The only exception is Kevin Harvick who has two victories over that stretch.

With that in mind, we are going to pick Kevin Harvick because he's the only recent two-time winner.

But keep an eye on Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin and Greg Biffle for their consistency, and Jimmie Johnson because of his long-time success at this track.

So enjoy a bit of Formula One and IndyCar, and then grab a six-pack (or two) of Coca Cola to guzzle during the 600-miler. TV coverage starts at 5:30 PM on FOX.
