2014 NHRA: Massey Eyes Second Straight Win And Second Topeka Win, But Will Have To Battle Dsr Teammate In Sunday's First Round

The most recent Top Fuel winner on the NHRA Mello Yello Series tour powered his Battery Extender Powered by Schumacher Top Fuel dragster to an elapsed time of 3.838 seconds in the final qualifying session at Heartland Park Topeka following a late start to the day's action after rain showers. That qualified Massey in the No. 12 slot.

After beating teammate Antron Brown in the semifinals last Monday at Atlanta Dragway en route to his 15th career NHRA victory, Massey will battle another DSR mate, this time seven-time NHRA champion Tony Schumacher in the opening round on Sunday at Heartland Park.

"We hate running a teammate early, we want to run them in the final round if we have to," Massey said. "It is what it is. We can blame ourselves. We should have qualified better and I'm sure Tony (Schumacher) wishes he would have qualified better than fifth.

"Sooner or later we're going to have to run them, but at least Don (Schumacher) has one car marching on to the second round. Tony and I always have great races. Tony is always on his A game and I have to be on mine anytime you race that U.S. Army car because Tony is the machine. That amps me up anytime you run Tony. It's fun to do it. I just wish it wasn't first round."

The Battery Extender driver enters Sunday's final eliminations ranked fifth in the Mello Yello Top Fuel standings, but just 13 points behind fourth place driver Shawn Langdon, the defending NHRA series champion.

The following are Massey's qualifying results and other event notes for the NHRA Kansas Nationals at Heartland Park Topeka.

No. 1 Qualifier: Brittany Force (John Force Racing) 3.746 sec., 329.75 mph

SPENCER MASSEY, Battery Extender Powered by Schumacher Top Fuel Dragster
Qualified: No. 12
First round: MASSEY vs. Tony Schumacher (No. 5)
FRIDAY: 3.853 sec., 320.89 mph, (Session 1); (Session 2, rained out)
SATURDAY: 8.135, 77.16, (Session 3); 3.838, 312.93 (Session 4)
