Bird's Barbados Bid Buoyed By New Local Sponsors

Former UK National Rally champion Paul Bird is targeting a third consecutive victory at Sol Rally Barbados 2014 which takes place on the Caribbean Island next weekend where the Ford Focus WRC08 will be resplendent with two new sponsors following a recent deal.

Local companies Rubis Petroleum and Cockspur Rum will be backing Bird's bid to make it a hat-trick of victories to consolidate the Cumbrian, from Langwathby, being the most successful overseas visitor to the Caribbean's biggest annual motor sport international, whereby 'Birdy' is also the first driver to have finished on the podium six years in a row and would become only the second to claim a hat-trick.

The British Superbike and MotoGP team boss, who will again have Aled Davies as co-driver said: "After winning the event for the past two years, I'm hungry for the hat-trick so to get two internationally known companies such as Rubis and Cockspur on board is brilliant and is just the boost I need. The team has worked wonders to get the car ready so the plan is to make it worthwhile for them, the sponsors and of course myself as I'm still hurting following my Manx accident. We will run the sponsorship decals for the remainder of the season in the UK also as part of our commitment."

Prior to the two-day SOL Rally Barbados getting underway on Saturday May 31st, Bird will be in action at the Scotiabank King of the Hill this weekend as a prelude to the action starting in earnest next weekend and will be hoping to improve on his second place of last year.

RUBIS is an established, French based international private limited company founded in 1990. They specialise in the downstream petroleum and chemicals sector, operating bulk liquid storage facilities (for petroleum products and chemicals) through their subsidiary, Rubis Terminal and distribute fuels through their subsidiary, Rubis Energie. Since 2000, Rubis has expanded its presence across three regions, (Africa, Europe and the Caribbean) through direct investments and acquisitions. The Group has enjoyed strong, regular growth since 2000, driven by organic growth, new sites and acquisitions, while also constantly improving its productivity.

Rubis is now a major player in the fuels distribution business in the Caribbean. On April 1st 2011, the company acquired the assets owned and operated by Chevron under the Texaco brand in the Eastern Caribbean. The acquisition meant that Rubis became a formidable competitor in the regional downstream business in the Caribbean islands of Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, St. Lucia, St Kitts and Nevis, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Trinidad and Tobago. These territories joined with the already acquired assets in Bermuda, Guadeloupe, Martinique and French Guiana. Further acquisitions during 2012 included the Chevron assets in The Bahamas, Cayman Islands and Turks and Caicos Islands. The company is now poised to distribute fuels throughout the region at any given notice. Combined with its skilled management structure and the synergies derived from prudent supply and shipping, Rubis has secured a leadership position with its logistics base comprising of over nine import storage terminals, a mixed set of commercial and aviation distribution activities along with over 200 retail service stations throughout the Caribbean.

COCKSPUR Rum has been making the party happen since 1884, when Danish seaman Valdemar Hanschell created COCKSPUR Rum in Barbados. Hanschell was a Dutch seaman who settled in Barbados, which was one of the biggest shipping ports in the Caribbean at the time. His business and COCKSPUR's popularity started booming and COCKSPUR Rum soon became the best-selling rum in Barbados.

While Valdemar Hanschell may have been the mastermind behind COCKSPUR Rum, he left the crafting of this special beach-aged rum to the Stade brothers. The Stade brothers shared his vision of making flavourful Caribbean rum that was free of the impurities which was common to many other spirits at the time. The Stade Brothers established the West Indies Rum Distillery where COCKSPUR Rum is made, right next to a pure coral filtered water aquifer. The Distillery is located on Brighton Beach, just north of the Barbados' capital city, Bridgetown.

Throughout the years, COCKSPUR Rum has stayed true to the traditional processes that make this rum unique. These include using only the purest coral-filtered water from the nearby aquifer as well as carefully selected barrels. The rum is then aged under warm Caribbean sunshine and fresh ocean breezes at our beach-side distillery.

Over the years COCKSPUR Rum has won many international spirit competition medals and, more recently, a Double Gold medal at the prestigious San Francisco World Spirits Competition. COCKSPUR Rum is a also member of the West Indies Rum and Spirits Producers Association and has been certified as an Authentic Caribbean Rum. One other tradition which COCKSPUR Rum has maintained is its colourful rooster icon.
