Rains Ends Chance For Lime Rock Redemption For Kelly Moss

The elements did not favor Kelly Moss Motorsports on Saturday, May 24 in Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA by Yokohama competition at Lime Rock Park.

Colin Thompson was the team's top finisher in the first 45-minute race, placing fifth in the No. 14 Kelly Moss/Porsche of Bucks County 911 GT3 Cup car.

But IMSA was forced to abandon the second race of the day due to heavy downpours, standing water on the track and a local curfew. Kelly Moss Vice-President Jeff Stone said it was a smart decision to not race instead of risking the drivers and cars in unsuitable conditions.

"I think today's race in the rain would have been a big mistake," Stone said. "They did the right thing calling it for safety's sake, and we hope we can make it up somewhere else."

Thompson ended up fifth after starting seventh and is tied atop the series standings with race winner Angel Benitez Jr. Both have 76 points.

"The only times I was able to move up was when people made mistakes, and that happened twice," Thompson said. "The problem was that everybody's cars were so similar it was hard to make advances on anybody. We were able to get decent points, and it's good to still be at the top of the leaderboard."

Thompson considers Lime Rock as his home track, and he was hoping for a better result. Thompson didn't get the qualifying run he wanted due to car repair and timing issues.

"We were repairing a crash incident on Colin's car before qualifying, and we were almost done," Stone said. "We needed those extra minutes to get the car we wanted, and it just didn't happen. So we didn't qualify as well as we had hoped, even though the car was on pace when the car was 100 percent."

The other three Kelly Moss drivers also faced issues throughout the day.

"I think it was a pretty disappointing day for Kelly Moss," Platinum Cup driver Dan Weyland said. "We had a couple of incidents and there was a lot of understeering for all of us, but we're going to get it together and keep getting better."

Weyland, driver of the No. 11 Porsche, finished 15th in Platinum Cup. Frank Seldorff, who has rejoined the team after a brief hiatus, finished ninth in Gold Cup and sixth in Gold Cup Masters.

"I'm a very conservative starter, so a bunch of cars passed me right in the beginning," Seldorff said. "I had a good battle with a couple of Gold cars. There was some back and forth. Halfway through, the track went off big time, but it was fun and it was nice to be with everyone I was competing with."

William "Wild Bill" Peluchiwski slid off the track in Turn 7 on Lap 17 and was unable to continue.

"It wasn't our best weekend," Stone said. "We're going to see where we are points-wise after this weekend and keep going after it in the next round."

Kelly Moss will remain on the go this week. Stone and other team officials flew from Lime Rock on Saturday night to their hometown, Madison, Wisconsin, where they will host the Cruise-In/Custom Car Show on Sunday during Brat Fest, the world's largest bratwurst festival.

The team is traveling to Watkins Glen International to race in the Clash of the Glen Porsche Club of America event next weekend. Kelly Moss is scheduled to have six entries, including cars for Seldorff, Thompson and Peluchiwski.

The next two rounds of the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA by Yokohama also will take place at Watkins Glen, on June 26-29. Kelly Moss will field seven entries for the GT3 races during the Sahlen's Six Hours of the Glen weekend.
