US Senate And House Honor Charlotte Motor Speedway

Key members of the North Carolina delegation and prominent supporters of U.S. Armed Forces initiatives have come together to salute the military celebration held annually at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The speedway has annually hosted the largest military recognition initiative on Memorial Day Weekend for more than five decades, beginning in the 1960s hosting WWI, WWII and Korean War veterans among the race fans.

Over the 55 years of the Memorial Day Weekend celebration at Charlotte Motor Speedway for the Coca-Cola 600, millions of race fans have joined together to celebrate the nation’s military heroes and honor their service of protecting and preserving the country’s freedom.

In a proclamation that named May 2014 as “LET FREEDOM RACE CELEBRATION MONTH AT CHARLOTTE MOTOR SPEEDWAY”, Sen. Richard Burr (R- NC) and Rep. Richard Hudson (R-NC) both recognized Charlotte Motor Speedway and its annual celebration of military heroes on Memorial Day Weekend. The House presentation was carried live on C-SPAN at http://www.c-span.org/video/?c4497885/05082014.

For longtime race and Medal of Honor recipient Bob Patterson, the Memorial Day Weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway has always been about military pride and recognition.

“I’ve been attending the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway for years,” said Patterson, U.S. Army (ret.), who received the Medal of Honor for his service in Vietnam. “As a veteran, it’s even more inspirational to attend the race and see the incredible tribute they pay to our nation’s military members. There is a real sense of pride when I’m able to join the other Medal of Honor recipients on stage as part of the pre-race ceremonies and see all the men and women who currently serve our country come marching in. It means a lot to me, and I know it means a lot to each and every one of them.”

Marcus Smith, president of Charlotte Motor Speedway, says the Let Freedom Race program is their unique way of giving back to those who serve.

“Charlotte Motor Speedway has created the Let Freedom Race program to honor the nation’s active duty military members, veterans and their families,” said Smith. “We have brought more than 100,000 military guests to Charlotte Motor Speedway on Memorial Day Weekend during our 55 year history, and we’re proud to again pay tribute to their service throughout our race weekend.”

With packages starting at just $99, fans can experience all the action and excitement that surrounds Coca-Cola 600 weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway with the Coca-Cola 600 Weekend Pass. The package includes tickets to see the stars of NASCAR hit the track to lay down the fastest lap during LiftMaster Pole Night on Thursday, May 22; a Saturday afternoon showdown as the NASCAR Nationwide Series drivers battle it out in the HISTORY 300 on May 24; and culminating with the historic 55th running of one of NASCAR's most prestigious events, the Cola-Cola 600 on Sunday, May 25.
