Costa Returns To Team Pelfrey And Finishes Fourth On Oval Debut

After claiming a pair of promising top-five finishes two weeks ago on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course, Team Pelfrey returned to the Indianapolis area yesterday – this time on the tricky 0.686-mile Lucas Oil Raceway oval – and repeated the feat in the Allied Building Products Oval Challenge, albeit with an entirely different pair of drivers.

Nicolas Costa, who in 2013 contested a partial Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires campaign with Team Pelfrey, finished a strong fourth at the 69th Annual Visit Hendricks County Night Before the 500, while veteran Norwegian Anders “The Viking” Krohn took fifth in his first race of the season.

Costa’s performance in his first-ever oval race was particularly impressive. The 22-year-old from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil made up one position from his starting position, and then kept the pressure on series veteran Shelby Blackstock before making the pass for third place on Lap 42. In the closing stages, Costa and title contender Scott Hargrove, the winner of both IMS road course races two weeks earlier, began to close rapidly on championship leader Spencer Pigot, who had been contending for the lead. The threesome was locked in combat going into the final stages of the physically demanding 90-lap race, with Krohn not far behind in fifth.

Hargrove’s greater experience allowed him to take advantage of a slip by Pigot and sneak by both of his rivals on Laps 83 and 84 to finish second, while Costa was relatively content with fourth.

“Firstly, my hat's off to the whole Team Pelfrey crew for their tireless efforts in preparing great cars this weekend,” said Team Pelfrey Team Manager Nigel Tuckey. “I was enormously proud of Nicolas Costa and his mentor/teammate Anders Krohn in the race tonight. For this to be Nicolas' first oval race is hard to believe as he was turning laps like a seasoned veteran out there and challenging for the podium. Anders was dragged out of ‘retirement’ and thrown in at the deep end this weekend to help assist Nicolas so that he could have the best possible chance of success at his first oval race and the whole team is deeply indebted to him.”

Team Pelfrey will return to action on the streets of Houston, Texas, for Rounds 8 and 9 of the Pro Mazda series which will run in conjunction with the Verizon IndyCar Series on June 28/29.

Anders Krohn (#81 Team Pelfrey/Gap Guard) - started fourth, finished fifth: “I’m incredibly happy with how our night went. The goal for me was to help develop the car alongside Nicolas and also help him get up to speed as a rookie on ovals. He did an amazing job and I’m thinking he could well be the new Helio Castroneves of the ovals. The car was great all race long and the only thing that prevented us from a podium was a somewhat rusty driver! Big thanks to Team Pelfrey for their continued efforts, and I’m looking forward to the road courses now and seeing what Nicolas can do with the car.”

Nicolas Costa (#99 Team Pelfrey/IMM (Impermeabiliacoes)/Alufama/Inova Marketing Esportivo/Tampa Bay Jaw Surgery/Gap Guard) - started fifth, finished fourth: “I'm really happy with the result we achieved Saturday. It felt like a win to me, especially from how much I was struggling on the oval in all the practices. I give full credit to Team Pelfrey and the development they did with the car and myself. The #99 car was really solid all weekend and that gave me the confidence I needed to push as I should. I’m looking forward to the next one.”
