Queensland Road Statistics 'Unacceptable' Says Paul Morris Ahead Of Fatality Free Friday

In showing support for Fatality Free Friday - this Friday, May 30 - Paul Morris, the Principal of the Holden Performance Driving Centre, has labeled the statistics surrounding injury sustained by young Queenslanders on our roads as unacceptable.

“All too often we see many young people taken on our roads - 100 people that die on Queensland roads each year are young drivers and 2,000 young Queenslanders are hospitalised each year as a result of road incidents,” said Morris.

“That figure, particularly considering 80% of those involved are male, is completely unacceptable.”

The Fatality Free Friday initiative, which implores drivers on Australian roads to actively concentrate on road safety and safe driving, aims for one full day to be fatality free. If this is top of mind for one day, drivers will drive safer for the days around Fatality Free Friday and over time change their outlook completely.

Queensland’s premier driver training facility, the Holden Performance Driving Centre - is based at Norwell some 40 minutes from Brisbane or the Gold Coast and conducts courses for drivers of all ages from pre-license age right through to racecar license testing.

“Through our Advanced Driver Training programs here at the Holden Performance Driving Centre, we aim to instill correct driving attitudes to drivers of all ages.

“Correct driving attitudes cut deeper than just getting out of a spin on a wet road, it’s everything from mirror position to seat position and of course being armed with the skills to handle a traffic situation,” Morris added.

“I have a saying that you wouldn’t get in a plane with an untrained pilot, so why would you get in a car with an untrained driver?”

Morris - who will join young V8 Supercars star, Chaz Mostert in the #6 Pepsi Max Crew Ford Performance Racing Falcon for the PIRTEK Enduro Cup - has a reputation as being a ‘hard man’ on the V8 Supercar circuit.

He pointed out the marked difference between race driving and road driving.

“Racing is an entertainment spectacle, but road driving is not,” explained Morris. “Strapped into a V8 Supercar, you have a helmet, a head and neck support device, six point harness - not to mention a rollcage and equipment that has been crash tested to support impacts at up to 260kph.

“Through years of experience as well, you can read what most of the guys you’re racing against are going to do before they do it.

“On the road, you don’t have those additional aids and you don’t know what the other person is going to do, so you have to take the precautionary measures up front and be armed with the skills to handle various situations.”

Anyone booking an Advanced Driver Training Course at the Holden Performance Driving Centre will receive a 50% discount if booked on Fatality Free Friday, said Morris.

“We want as many Queenslanders to be doing an advanced driver training course and try to turn those horrifying statistics around, hence why making this offer,” he concluded.
