Storylines/Things To Watch For
Major League: In September 2012, the Sports Car Club of America rolled out the U.S. Majors Tour as the top level of amateur racing in this country. The Majors Tour replaces what was previously called “National” SCCA racing, split into a season-long championship in four geographic Conferences. This weekend’s event for the Northern Conference at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course has pulled nearly 250 top-level drivers from around the Midwest and East Coast.

BFGoodrich Tires Super Tour Six Pack: The official street tire of the SCCA, BFGoodrich Tires, returns for its fourth season as sponsor of the BFGoodrich Tires Super Tour events. In 2014, those stops included already hosted events at Sebring International Raceway and NOLA Motorsports Park, Road Atlanta, and Thunderhill Raceway Park. This weekend’s event at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course and the Majors at Watkins Glen International, during Independence Day weekend, are the final events on the 2014 calendar.

SCCA Club Racers – The Best in The Country: There are lots of amateur road racing groups in the United States, but the clear leader of top drivers is with the SCCA. Though most are weekend warriors who take vacations from their full-time jobs to attend races, it’s a craft taken seriously. Bobby Rahal, Mark Donohue, Roger Penske, Michael Andretti, and actor/driver Paul Newman got their start in SCCA Club Racing. More recently, you could have seen current stars Boris Said, Graham Rahal, Sam Hornish or J.R. Hildebrand at an SCCA Club race.

Chock Full of History: Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course is no stranger to the SCCA Safe Racer Club Racing program. The track, dubbed the “Most Competitive in the U.S.,” hosted the season-ending SCCA National Championship Runoffs® from1994 through 2005 (and is slated for a 2016 event, as well).

Many racing luminaries called Mid-Ohio their home track, won an SCCA National Championship, and went on to other racing successes. Bobby Rahal was an SCCA Runoffs winner, and son Graham Rahal followed suit when he became the youngest Runoffs champion in Club history. Former Mid-Ohio owner Jim Trueman listed SCCA National Champion on his resume. Dozens of others have followed suit.

RaceGearBox.com GT-Lite Invitational: One of the highlights this weekend is the RaceGearBox.com GT-Lite Invitational. Eleven GT-Lite cars, running in Group 6 this weekend, will compete for additional prizes posted by the transmission company.

Northern Conference in Gear: While many of the other three Majors Conference seasons are wrapping up, the Northern Conference is just hitting its stride. Now that the snow has melted, eight of the 12 rounds of the season will run in the next two months.
