The Florida-based DragonSpeed team used the month-long hiatus in the Pirelli World Challenge schedule to reset and refresh its 2014 program in support of Swedish racer Henrik Hedman, who shares second place in the GT-A (amateur) class point standings going into this weekend’s double-header in support of the IndyCar Detroit Grand Prix.

Following the sudden departure from the series and team of driver Mike Hedlund, the Elton Julian-run squad started by making sure it retained the services of Hedlund’s chief mechanic, Claudio Bernard, who will now oversee the expansion of DragonSpeed’s Delray Beach shop to include a composites facility.

Members of Hedman’s own crew have now extended their efforts to include his forays in the Ferrari Challenge North America. Henrik returned to that series in mid-May at Laguna Seca, where he put his recent PWC experience to good use, claiming second place in both races. The rapid Swede will also compete in the Ferrari Challenge rounds supporting the Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix next weekend. He will be joined there by DragonSpeed co-owner Pete Aronson, making his Ferrari Challenge debut after promising outings with the team last year at the 24 Hour Dubai enduro and the Lime Rock rounds of the Lamborghini Super Trofeo.

Hedman established himself as a serious contender for the GT-A class title with what would have been a pair of podium finishes but for a slow puncture suffered by his GT3 Ferrari 458 in the second race of last month’s IndyCar event at Barber Motorsports Park. Tied with Mercedes GT3 driver Tim Pappas on 205 points, Henrik lies only 20 points adrift of the class leader, Porsche pilot Michael Mills.

Henrik Hedman: “I look forward to resuming my push to join the GT-A front runners on a consistent basis. Doing the Challenge rounds at Laguna has kept me sharp during the break, and taking a pair of podiums there was good for my confidence as well. If I can match my commitment to the team’s, I believe the results will follow.”

Elton Julian: “We’ve taken the opportunity of the month off and reverting to a single entry to put more resources behind Henrik. A strong return after the break will allow us to maintain the momentum we built at the opening rounds, so I see this weekend as key to the rest of our season. Our increased involvement in Henrik’s Ferrari Challenge program can only reinforce our effectiveness as a team.”
