Walker Fishes His Way Into Top 12 For Final Day Of Northern Open No 1

Cabela's/GEICO For Your Boat pro angler David Walker needed a big Friday to advance to the final day of the Northern Open No. 1 on Douglas Lake, and he got just that.

Walker landed five fish weighing 18 pounds, 2 ounces to end up eighth after two days at the event. With the top 12 advancing to Saturday's final day of competition, Walker is in position to contend for the victory.

"I felt like I had really dug myself into a hole (Thursday), meaning today I really needed to do something big to get us out of that situation," Walker said. "Realistically though, being in a hole, you're not going to change anything too much. Thankfully, it worked out for me today."

Walker had 13 pounds, 13 ounces on Thursday's first day, giving him a total of 31 pounds, 15 ounces. He's less than 7 pounds out of the lead.

"Tomorrow there are only 12 boats left to compete," Walker said. "I'm hoping that my excuse for doing poorly the first day, of having too many boats in one area, is correct. If it is, we should have a really great day."

Walker is from Sevierville, Tenn., so he has plenty of knowledge of Douglas Lake, and it came in handy as he competed against 187 boats on the 44-square mile lake.

"I think having as much experience on this lake as I have really helped me today," Walker said. "The lake we are fishing is very small. Every time you went to an area on the lake you would run into at least two or three boats there already.

"That made it a struggle to find a good place to fish. I think that's why some of the weights were down today. I was, however, able to find a few key places today that I had caught fish in before."

Now, Walker is hopeful of turning the additional room on the lake Saturday into another good performance.

"I'm happy about making the top 12," Walker said. "I'm looking forward to tomorrow, and I have a good feeling we will be leaving here with a win."
