Blomqvist Storms To Victory In Hungary

Tom Blomqvist took a dominant win for the Jagonya Ayam with Carlin team today, in race one of the weekend at the Hungarian round of the 2014 FIA Formula 3 European Championship. The British racer stole the lead at the start and withstood pressure to take victory by over four seconds. Sean Gelael drove a strong race to take a point in tenth, while Antonio Giovinazzi suffered opposite fortunes with a pit stop for damage and a drive through penalty.

Too much wheel spin for pole man Esteban Ocon allowed Blomqvist to fight for the lead from second on the grid, but a fast starting Max Verstappen from third was the Jagonya Ayam driver’s main rival as the field entered the first corner. Blomqvist set out his position early on, taking a firm line which saw Verstappen run wide. While Verstappen recovered, it was Ocon who was able to sneak back through into a close second to Blomqvist.

Team mate Giovinazzi meanwhile was also involved in some close racing action, with contact on the first lap both forcing him wide and damaging his front wing. The Italian managed to recover to run in ninth place while Gelael was 15th having avoided the first lap clashes.

By lap two, Blomqvist was already under pressure from Ocon, but the British racer kept his nerve to hold the position. Behind him, Giovinazzi was pushing hard, despite running with a severely damaged front wing, putting Gustavo Menezes under pressure for P8.

By lap four, Blomqvist had managed to break the tow from Ocon and had a more comfortable one second gap. Giovinazzi meanwhile was shown the black and orange flag, and was forced to enter the pits for repairs to his precariously hanging front wing.

With Giovinazzi’s race now ruined by his enforced pit stop, Gelael was running a strong race and was up to 12th by lap six. That position became tenth when both Menenzes and Esteban Fuoco had to serve drive through penalties. The Indonesian continued to run a strong race, holding off Jake Dennis in the sister Carlin car behind.

At the front Blomqvist was on a mission, setting the fastest lap of the race and pulling out the gap to Ocon to over five seconds on lap 15. At the flag, Blomqvist took his third win of the season, while Gelael came home 10th in the final points paying position. Giovinazzi endured a race to forget after a drive through for exceeding track limits saw him at the back of the field.

Speaking about his race winner Blomqvist said, “I had a very good start, which I think was the pivotal point of race. Then my aim was just to drive my own race. The team gave me an extremely good car so then it was down to me not to make any mistakes and be consistent. I’m really happy.”

Gelael added, “It was a good race, the pace in the middle of the race was good. I had a really bad start which cost a few positions off the line. I think with work on the starts we can be right up there – we have the pace. But now we have to focus on qualifying and a few tweaks that we need to make. We’re going in the right direction so I’m pretty happy.”

The drivers will be back on track for the second qualifying session of the weekend at 16.25 local time. Race two and three of the weekend will follow on Sunday.
