Fifth For King As Dennis Recovers

Jordan King took points for fifth place today, in the first FIA Formula 3 European Championship race of the weekend in Hungary. The British racer looked under no pressure during his race to fifth place, while team mate Jake Dennis put in a stunning recovery from the back of the grid to finish just outside the points in 11th.

Following qualifying yesterday, King started race one of the weekend from eighth today. The Carlin man made a lightning start, briefly moving up to fourth before getting squeezed wide and dropping back to sixth. Team mate Dennis meanwhile, who had been forced to start from the back of the grid after a contact from another car in qualifying yesterday, catapulted through the order and had climbed from 25th to 16th by the end of lap one.

Both drivers had relatively uneventful races, staying clear of various incidents and staying within track limits while several other drivers were penalised with drive through penalties. At the chequered flag King took fifth place and more precious points for his championship campaign. Dennis meanwhile was 11th, just shy of the points, following home Sean Gelael in the sister Jagonya Ayam with Carlin car. The Carlin man did however claim third on the rookies’ podium.

Speaking about his race, King said, “The start was really good for me, I got Antonio Giovinazzi, Antonio Fuoco and Felix Rosenqvist off the line and I thought at first I might be looking good for fourth. Unfortunately I then got pushed to the outside and I was on the grass with no choice really but to back out of it otherwise there would have been an accident. Fifth is not too bad but obviously we still want more.”

Team mate Dennis added, “From the back of the grid to 11th is a good recovery, but I’m frustrated we weren’t rewarded with a point and of course even more frustrated that we didn’t get to show our true potential after the contact from another car in qualifying yesterday. Second qualifying is later today and I’m aiming to show what we’re really capable of then.”
