Ghiotto Shines In Spa Taking 6th Place In Race 1

You could tell that Spa-Francorchamps is a special venue for Luca Ghiotto just looking at his record on the Belgian track. On the circuit's fast sweepers the Italian talent clinched his first ever win in the F.Renault 2.0 Eurocup last year, followed by another victory one week later in the ALPS championship.

This year, despite being at the wheel of a much more powerful car (530 bhp against 210) such as the F.Renault 3.5 Dallara-Zytek, Luca confirmed his special feeling with one of the most challenging tracks in motorsport.

After starting the weekend with a solid performance in Free Practice 1 and having to cope with steering issues both in FP2 and Qualifying, Ghiotto delivered a staggering performance in today's Race, recovering from a P11 start to cross the line in 6th place. With steering gremlins solved thanks to a new rack fitted by the team after Qualifying, Luca had a perfect car to suit his ambitions and didn't lose any time to make the most of it. First he took advantage of the first lap mayhem to climb up to 7th and then, once he was well into the points, he engaged in a very tactical battle with fellow competitor Sorensen. Making the most of a quick and balanced car he chased the Danish driver controlling the gap lap after lap, and on the penultimate lap he delivered a bold overtaking move at Eau Rouge, crossing the line in P6 in front of a speechless WSR paddock.

Luca Ghiotto: Q1 - P11; R1 - P6
"From 6th row it wasn't an easy race, but I tried to remain as focused as possible, lapping on a good pace and trying to make the most of any opportunity. That allowed me to profit from other's misfortunes to climb as high as P7 behind Sorensen, and once I was there I tried to use a bit of strategy. I pressed him, staying close enough to make him feel the need to use DRS. At the same time, staying in his wake allowed me to save some DRS time for later into the race, and that proved paramount giving me enough speed to put him under huge pressure in the last few laps. Finally he made a mistake missing the apex at La Source, and I ran wheel to wheel with him on the downill section to Eau Rouge. I expected him to lift as he was on the outside, but he kept his foot down and we entered one of the quickest corners in motorsport side by side. If it wasn't the best pass of my career it's very close, and if somebody was wondering if I've got balls... well they have their answer now".
