2014 NHRA: Spencer Massey NHRA SummerNationals Qualifying Report: No. 12

Spencer Massey and the Battery Extender Powered by Schumacher Top Fuel team have proven that it doesn't matter where you qualify in the 16-car NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series field.

With the win last week in Topeka and the week before near Atlanta, Spencer became the first driver in NHRA history to win back-to-back races from outside the top-8 qualifying positions.

At the NHRA Southern Nationals near Atlanta, Spencer qualified No. 10 and last weekend at the NHRA Kansas Nationals the Battery Extender team got the Wally trophy from the No. 12 starting spot.

Massey will attempt to make history again this weekend as the Battery Extender team qualified 12th for Sunday's NHRA Summernationals eliminations at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in Englishtown, N.J.

"I've always said it doesn't matter where you qualify, as long as you do," Spencer said. "We definitely have a better race car than what it shows on that sheet and I think we have definitely shown that on race day.

"To be the first one to do something in NHRA history, that just amazes me. It really does. I grew up loving this sport and just wanting to drive a Top Fuel dragster. I don't think I've ever thought of doing something that no one else has done."

Massey made his best pass of the weekend, a 3.811-second lap at 320 mph for the No. 12 starting spot, during the final qualifying session on Saturday at Englishtown.

"We want to knock out this first three-race swing with three Wallys," he said. "That would be huge for DSR and for this team so the pressure is on. But we have to take it one round at a time and not beat ourselves. That's really important. We're not going to have lane choice but we've seen good passes in both lanes this weekend so we just have to go out there and race our lane and turn on that win light.

"We just have to go out there and turn on four win lights and re-write NHRA history again. That would be incredible."
