2014 NHRA: Antron Brown NHRA Summernationals Qualifying Report: No. 9

Returning to the site of where Antron Brown spent many weekends watching his father and uncle race is special to him just for that reason.

Add in that members of his New Jersey family and friends come to Old Bridge Township Raceway Park to visit between qualifying runs when the 2012 NHRA Top Fuel world champion isn't fulfilling sponsorship commitments or mixing his blend of nitromethane and methanol.

The best time for him to celebrate with family and old friends would be Sunday in the winner's circle after the 45th annual NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown, N.J.

The 38-year-old native of Chesterfield, N.J., has been able to do that in 2002 and 2005 but that was when he competed in Pro Stock Motorcycle. While he isn't dismissing those accomplishments, nothing would top being there with the 45th NHRA Wally trophy of his career.

But nothing is on his mind beyond getting past Sunday's opening round when he faces Don Schumacher Racing teammate and seven-time world champion Tony Schumacher. It will be the third time this year the teammates have met with each winning once but the first time in an opening round.

This time Schumacher, who Antron had defeated in 24 of 43 meetings, will have his choice of lanes.

"Lane choice doesn't matter," Antron said. "People have run really good in both lanes. You just have to hit them hard and to the best of your ability. We'll just see where we end up," said Antron, who is competing in the 300th event of his career, and was runner-up in Top Fuel in 2009 and 2010.

"There are no easy opponents in this class. We know Tony and the Army guys will bring their best and it's going to take everything we can bring to get the job done."

The Matco Tools team produced its best run of the weekend with a time of 3.786 seconds at 313.73 mph Friday night and posted a 3.790 (319.07) in Saturday's last session.

"We're definitely trying to go harder and faster," he said. "It's a little tricky. We're working some stuff out and that last run was a good one to get on the board before tomorrow.

"We're ready for race day. We're going to go in there with our heads down. We ran a 3.79 that was about three hundredths off, so we can try to see where we can pick the car up. That's what our Matco crew does best."
