2014 NHRA: Matt Hagan NHRA Summernationals Qualifying Report: No. 13

It's time to take a step forward for Matt Hagan and the Mopar Express Lane/Rocky Boots Funny Car team and that's the goal for Sunday's NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series eliminations in Englishtown, N.J.

It has been a tough start to 2014 for the 2011 NHRA Funny Car champion but Matt has confidence in his team led by crew chief Dickie Venables.
On the tricky Old Bridge Township Raceway Park track, the Mopar/Rocky Boots Dodge Charger R/T team qualified No. 13 with their best run of 4.080-seconds coming in Friday's first session of NHRA Summernationals qualifying.

"We've had a tough qualifying outing but I think we're going to be just fine," Matt said. "You have to be optimistic and turn this into a positive and make sure that you're looking at the bright side of things.

"It's been a tough weekend, it's been a tough year. There's no way around it. It's just that we're still fighting through some stuff that's biting us. We did make a good run this weekend with that 4.08 and we have a tough battle first round tomorrow."

Hagan will take on John Force during Sunday's opening round of eliminations. Force defeated the Mopar team in the final round of eliminations at the NHRA season-opener in Pomona, Calif., earlier this season.

"We're due. We're going to catch a break along the way and we might as well do it tomorrow. I'd love nothing more than to take Force out. Those guys have been strong all year long, they've dominated and we have to turn things around.

"I know my guys need a win. My guys need some round wins, some momentum. I think we can do it. I've got to go up there with the mentality that we are going to take everybody down tomorrow. You can't really go off how you qualify. I won my first race ever when we qualified in the No. 14 spot so you never know.

"That's why you line them up on Sunday and race."
