2014 NHRA: Jack Beckman NHRA Summernationals Qualifying Report: No. 5

Jack Beckman and the Infinite Hero Foundation/Valvoline Funny Car was solid in his first three qualifying runs but saved its best for last in Saturday's final session of the 45th annual NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown, N.J.

The 2012 NHRA Funny Car world champion uncorked a 4.017-second run at 318.99 mph that was his quickest run of the season and the quickest on Saturday by any Funny Car driver to move him to fifth in qualifying for Sunday's championship eliminations at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park. He will face Chad Head in the opening round.

Jack's 4.017 moved his team led by crew chief Rob Flynn up the No. 5 qualifying position for Sunday's championship eliminations at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park.

The Infinite Hero team was the most consistent Funny Car over the four qualifying sessions with runs ranging from the 4.017 to his slowest at 4.085.

"You can consistently be a middle of the pack car but you're probably not going to get out of the second round," Jack said. "Eventually, the consistency leads to leaning on the car that produces quicker runs and then getting consistency.

"I've got our Infinite Hero challenge coins that I'm taking on every run and the fans are eating them up at 100 bucks each and all of the proceeds go to help the soldiers."

Jack is one of only two Don Schumacher Racing Funny Cars to advance to a championship round this season and none of DSR's four Dodge Charger R/Ts have won a title this season.

"It's been a trying season for the Schumacher Funny Cars. I'm hoping we're turning the corner and our team specifically. It's been since St. Louis in 2012 since we've won. I'd like to break that non-winning jinx.

"We have a great race car. When the crew sees those numbers (4.017) pop up on the scoreboard it makes all of the effort worthwhile. I can't wait for tomorrow."

Provisional No. 1 Qualifier: Cruz Pedregon (Cruz Pedregon Racing) 3.959 sec., 310.48 mph
