2014 NHRA: Career-Bests For Arana Jr Has Lucas Oil Buell Rider Beaming

After running the best elapsed time and speed of his career, Lucas Oil Buell rider Hector Arana Jr. was as happy as New York Rangers fans, who saw their beloved team reach the Stanley Cup finals earlier this week.

Arana made the quickest run of the final qualifying session, 6.772 seconds at 198.12 mph, to snare the No. 2 spot for Sunday's eliminations of the Toyota NHRA Summernationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park

"That was my career-best e.t. and mph," a beaming Arana said. "Even though I didn't get No. 1, I was happy. We kept improving and every run was faster and faster. We never went backwards, we never looked back, and that's all that matters."

Arana has had a stellar weekend because his Buell was fast in every session. He was No. 3 in the first qualifying run Friday with a pass of 6.849 at 194.58 mph and then went fastest in Saturday's first session, 6.797 at 195.42 mph, but then he lowered that elapsed time in the final session.

The Pro Stock Motorcycle field got only three chances at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park this weekend, as the first session Friday was canceled because NHRA needed time to work on the racetrack.

"We've been finessing with things here and there," Arana said. "The run before, when we ran a .79, I was honestly surprised we ran that fast. I was hanging off the side of the bike, fighting it. We're working on little things here and there and working out the bugs."

Arana hopes for a long Sunday, but his focus is on first-round opponent Jim Underdahl, who qualified No. 15 with a pass of 6.929 seconds at 193.29 mph.

"I'm totally stoked and excited for tomorrow," Arana said. "I'm going back to the roots when we started off so well: One round at a time, keeping it simple."

Qualifying highlights will air this evening beginning at 4:30 p.m. on ESPN2. Eliminations start at noon, Sunday, and will be shown in slight tape-delay later Sunday afternoon.
