Fewer Bites Couldn't Slow Walker Down In Northern Open No 1

After making the final cut for the Northern Open No. 1, pro angler David Walker continued to move up the overall standings Saturday on Douglas Lake and ultimately finished No. 7.

The Cabela's/GEICO For Your Boat Elite angler had a slow day but managed to pull in five fish at 15 pounds, 9 ounces on championship day, bringing his overall total of 15 fish to 47 pounds, 8 ounces.

"Just like I initially thought, having fewer boats out there really was better," Walker said. "There was hardly anyone out on the lake today. Because of that, I was able to fish every place I wanted to, but the weird thing was that I caught fewer fish. I had 15 pounds, which is alright but not great. I was a little surprised at how many fewer bites I had today.

"We were fishing offshore and in deeper water, so the electronics were even more important. The trick is to look for groups of fish, but for whatever reason when we found a group of fish Saturday, they were nearly impossible to catch when normally they are an easy catch. I caught maybe 10 or 12 fish, which is a particularly slow day on Douglas Lake. At least they weren't all small fish. There were some three-pounders, which was good."

Even though Walker had a slower day on Douglas Lake Saturday, he knows that he can't be completely disappointed. After regrouping and making the final cut, Walker not only brought home a top-12 finish and a bigger paycheck, but he also earned the title of the Toyota Bonus Bucks winner.

"Overall, coming out of here in seventh place is good," Walker said. "I would have had to pull off some sort of super heroics to get the win today anyway. I've been a lot less happy with higher finishes before, so I feel pretty good about this weekend as a whole."
