2014 NHRA: Spencer Massey NHRA SummerNationals Event Recap: First Round

Spencer Massey knew the winning streak couldn't last forever but he didn't want it to end as early as it did during Sunday's NHRA Summernationals eliminations at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park.

Massey's eight consecutive round winning streak came to a halt after his Battery Extender Powered by Schumacher Top Fuel dragster overpowered the tricky right lane in Englishtown during the first round of Sunday's eliminations.

With wins at the previous two NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series events near Atlanta and at Topeka, Kan., Spencer enjoyed seeing the win light shine bright in his lane but the glimmer of his 10,000-horsepower dragster gaining strength kept Massey and the Battery Extender team from being disappointed on Sunday.

"We're actually more pleased this weekend with that 3.81 pass in the last session of qualifying than we have been with our car," he said. "We've been making changes and the car finally responded last night and that felt great.

"The first round today (Sunday) we were on a good pass but we probably just overpowered it too much," said Spencer of his tire-hazing 4.130-second pass that lost to Brittany Force's 3.789.

The Battery Extender team will leave New Jersey in the fourth spot of the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series Top Fuel standings as the series takes its first weekend off in four weeks.

"We definitely had a great three-race swing," he said. "Taking home two Wally's in three races is something I'll never complain about. The team will head back to Brownsburg and start preparing for four races in a row. That's a tough stretch but last year we did really well so I'm excited to do it again."

After an off weekend, the NHRA series races at Bristol, Tenn., Epping, N.H., Chicago and Norwalk, Ohio. Massey was runner-up at the Bristol event and event winner at Epping last season.
