2014 NHRA: Matt Hagan NHRA Summernationals Event Recap: Second Round

Matt Hagan was just six-thousandths of a second from earning a trip to the semifinal round of Sunday's 45th annual NHRA Summernationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park.

But that's just how it goes sometime according to the 2011 NHRA Funny Car champion.

"That's how the chips fall," Matt said after losing in the second round to Don Schumacher Racing teammate Jack Beckman on a holeshot.

Jack's slower elapsed time of 4.133 seconds turned on the win light over Matt's 4.121 second lap, but Jack's reaction time of .073 seconds was just a tick quicker than Matt's .091.

"I hate the way it looks on paper but that's just how it fell today," Matt said. "It's one of those deals where I probably should've put it in a little more than I did but the end result would've been the same.

"All of that aside I feel confident in our car because it's coming around and it went down the racetrack both laps today. I think if we would've just got by that round we would've went two more rounds."

The 10,000-horsepower Dodge Charger R/T was one of few nitro-powered machines to make two full runs on the tricky Old Bridge Township Raceway Park right lane. Teams also were faced with the warmest conditions of the New Jersey weekend.

"Dickie (Venables) did a great job figuring out that right lane and getting the car to go down it and run good compared to what a lot of other people were doing."

The Mopar/Rocky Boots team will travel back to the Brownsburg, Ind., headquarters for a weekend off before racing at Bristol, Tenn., Epping, N.H., Chicago and Norwalk, Ohio, over four consecutive weekends.

The second-round loss dropped the team to 10th in NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Funny Car points standings.

"We just need some things to fall our way and they haven't yet. We'll take a week off, regroup and get ready for four in a row. It'll be a challenge but I know this team will be ready for it."
