Jack Aitken Makes Best of Difficult Weekend in Spa - Eurocup FR 2.0

Jack Aitken's tough introduction to Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 continued this weekend during the second round of the championship at Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium. In the middle of his final-year exams at school, the 18 year old dashed over from London for three days to the iconic Grand Prix circuit to compete in the large grid of 40 cars, most of whom were piloted by full time racers. The task was not made any easier as his Fortec Motorsport team struggled to find the right set-up for its drivers over the race weekend.

In these circumstances Jack could only qualify in 15th position for the first race on Saturday morning, with team mates Caterham-supported Matt Parry in 16th and Martin Rump back in 26th place. From this mid-pack position Jack made a good start to race one in the afternoon, gaining a couple of places in a clean opening lap. Progress was short lived, however, lack of pace meaning he was unable to challenge the leading pack. He finished in a disappointing 17th place.

For the second race on Sunday the car handling issues remained unresolved and Jack found himself in 19th position on the grid after qualifying. Following another very good start off the line in the afternoon, where he gained several places on his rivals once again, Jack spent the rest of the race trying to defend his position against the faster cars around him. He took the chequered flag twelve laps later, one place down in 20th.

However Jack remains resolute, saying, "It was a tough weekend for both the drivers and the team. Everyone is disappointed because we want to be winning, but sometimes you have to endure times like this and just work hard to find the solution. I’m confident that we’ll be back on form soon."

Jack flew back to London immediately after the race to continue with his final exams. The next round of the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 championship takes place at the Moscow Raceway, Russia, 28 - 29 June, 2014.
