Win-Tron Racing; Mason Mingus Eager For Season Turnaround At Texas

Sunoco rookie of the year candidate Mason Mingus and his Win-Tron Racing team head to Texas Motor Speedway (TMS) this week in search of some “lady luck” that will get their freshman NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) season back on track in Friday night’s WinStar World Casino 400.

The Mooresville, North Carolina-based team had high hopes last week at Dover (Del.) International Speedway, but an early race incident stemming from contact with another competitor just seven laps into the 200-lap race, made for a long afternoon and a frustrating 26th place finish.

However, as every team knows in NASCAR, the bad luck is bound to expire sooner or later. For the Call 811 Before You Dig racing team though, that turnaround can’t come soon enough.

“Dover was pretty tough for us,” said Mingus. “I understand it was a racing incident, it just was discouraging and frustrating all at the same time. It seems like no matter what we do, we can’t seem to catch a break. But, Texas is this weekend and things are often bigger in Texas, so I hope that means a big finish for us on Friday night.”

While Mingus, 19, has never seen the 1.5-mile oval, his Win-Tron Racing team has some experience there. The team participated in the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards race back in 2010, earning a fourth place finish. Furthermore, the Mark Rette-led team feels they can rely on their intermediate setups to get their No. 35 Call 811 Before You Dig Toyota Tundra steered in the right direction.

“I’m excited to go to Texas, I think we have a good truck for the race,” offered Mingus. “We’ve been solid all year long, but always just seem to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. For some reason, I like the rougher race tracks and I’ve been told that Texas is pretty bumpy, so I think it will fit my style nicely.”

The Brentwood, Tennessee native also feels that the experience he inhaled at Kansas Speedway and Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway last month could pay dividends in the sixth race of the season.

“I think a lot of what I learned at Charlotte will translate to Texas,” Mingus explained. “Charlotte was bumpy and like I mentioned before, I’ve been told that Texas is too. With these trucks, when we go to a mile and a half track, it’s all about throttle percentage and how long you can stay in it, which is something I had to adjust to at Kansas and Charlotte. Having those two races to gain laps and seat time will help a lot leading into the weekend.”

Nate Thiesse, co-truck owner of Win-Tron Racing offered his insights on this weekend’s activities.

“We need some luck,” he noted. “Mason has had the speed all year, we’ve built some great Toyota Tundras, but luck is something that hasn’t been on our side. We’re optimistic heading into Texas. I feel like this is the weekend we can deliver a second top-10 finish of the year. In some ways, Kansas and Texas have similar traits, so we hope that will play into our hands. One thing is for sure, we won’t go quietly into the night.”

Mingus’s No. 35 Call 811 Before You Dig Toyota Tundra is chassis No. 46, a brand new truck that has never competed.

Entering Texas, Mingus sits 16th in the championship standings, 35 markers from 10th place held by Joey Coulter. Mingus unofficially sits second in the Sunoco rookie of the year standings, behind current leader Ben Kennedy.

The WinStar World Casino 400 is the sixth of 22 races on the 2014 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series schedule. The event will be televised live on FOX Sports 1 on Friday night, June 6 beginning at 7:30 p.m. The green flag is scheduled to drop shortly after 8:00 p.m. All times Central.
