GEICO Motorcycle's Webb Charges To Enduro X Silver Medal In X Games Austin

GEICO Motorcycle Beta rider Cody Webb wasn't thrilled when he first walked the track before competition began for the 2014 Summer X Games on Friday at the Circuit of the Americas.

By the end of the day, though, Webb had a silver medal in Enduro X after a strong ride in the main event.

"I walked the track this morning, and it wasn't to my favor," Webb said. "It was really fast with a lot of big jumps. I grew up with a Trials background, so it's not really my forte. But I rode strong all day and didn't make any big mistakes."

The medal was Webb's fifth in X Games completion, and his third silver. The performance followed up a victory in the opening round of the GEICO Motorcycle EnduroCross Series in Las Vegas.

Webb posted the ninth-quickest seeding lap but then finished a strong second in his heat race. His Trials background came into play in the main, especially through a treacherous rock section of the track carved out on part of the Formula One circuit.

"I settled in a comfortable position and kept telling myself, 'I need to get going,'" Webb said. "I was running fourth most of the main event, and finally in the last couple of laps, I put the hammer down and was able to capitalize, truck ahead and get a silver medal."

The rock section was crucial to his advancement. After losing a spot on the opening lap, he took advantage of a mistake by another rider to get into second with two laps remaining.

"I knew the rock section would play in my favor, especially with my long legs and being on the light two-stroke," Webb said. "Everyone else was making up time earlier when no one else was on the track, but when you hit a bottleneck (on the rocks), you've got to be smart and patient.

"I made one mistake on the first lap and got hung up there. From there, I got through it solid every lap and was able to gain ground on the leaders and get a silver medal."

Webb tried to close on winner Taddy Blazusiak on the final lap, but he needed more time.

"Taddy was a little bit ahead, and at the end of the race, it was a little too late," Webb said. "Maybe with two more laps, I could've been able to capitalize and get right on him and make a pass. But I was a little too far behind."
