Together But Separate: Performance Tech Sixth In PC, Wins Lites Pole In Kansas

Performance Tech Motorsports took over Kansas Speedway on Friday, June 6, qualifying seven cars combined for the IMSA TUDOR United SportsCar Championship and Cooper Tires Prototype Lites Powered by Mazda Kansas Grand Prix weekend.

The team qualified its No. 38 Dash Neighborhoods/Phillips 66 Prototype Challenge car in the sixth position for the TUDOR Championship two-part event with David Ostella behind the wheel. The team found better positioning for the Prototype Lites race, with Masters driver Craig Duerson landing his No. 27 L1 car on pole.

Ostella and Duerson wrote similar qualifying stories despite their different endings. Both drivers landed their final position on the last lap of qualifying on the six-turn, 2.37-mile road course that incorporates nearly the entire 1.5-mile oval known for NASCAR competition.

With one minute left in PC qualifying, Ostella busted out a final hot lap to lift the car from eighth to sixth. The final lap was clocked at 1 minute, 12.766 seconds, his quickest lap of the day.

"That was better," Ostella said. "I felt like the car had better rotation. Power was no problem. It felt flat out in most of the corners. The last lap was the fastest we've been so far. I'm not much of a qualifier, so I think things will be different tomorrow. We always seem to be a little more on point on race day."

Duerson found his pole-winning lap on his last lap of qualifying with no time left in the 20-minute session. As a Masters competitor, Duerson was able to prove that sometimes more experience equals more speed.

"I got pole, and I'm a Master," Duerson said. "I had a good strategy going into qualifying. Performance Tech put a good car underneath me. I'm pretty experienced in drafting and used it to my advantage and came out on pole."

The rest of the Performance Tech Prototype Lites competitors filled the field evenly with future 24 Hours of LeMans driver Matt McMurry qualifying third, Robert Alon fourth, Hayden Duerson sixth, Jon Brownson 12th and Joel Janco 15th.
.
Team Principal Brent O'Neill will find himself plenty busy watching all seven of his cars on track fight for position.

"All the cars ran good," O'Neill said. "It was great that Craig was able to pull off a flyer on the last lap. Here it's the luck of the draw with the draft and how you position yourself. Craig is the best at it. He's got a lot of laps, and he figured it out on the last lap. It's going to be a fight.

"For the PC class, you know, it's the same. David (Ostella) did his best lap on his last lap. We're getting the car better set up for him. David did a great job. He's a racer; he'll get out there and fight."

The double-header/two-part race weekend begins at 4:15 p.m. (CT) Saturday for Cooper Tires Prototype Lites Powered by Mazda Race 1 and the first half of the PC race, running simultaneously. Lites Race 2 and the final half of the PC race will take place under the lights at 10:15 p.m. This will be the first time the two series have shared a track together, but they will be scored separately.
