Kyle Gimple Moves Forward for Fourth at Kansas Speedway

Despite having to fight a gearbox issue throughout the 150-minute Grand Prix of Kansas on Saturday night, Kyle Gimple and his co-driver Ryan Eversley piloted Compass360 Racing’s No. 75 Children's Tumor Foundation/ HPD/Racing4research.org Honda Civic Si all the way from a 15th place starting position to a fourth place finish, just a step off of the podium.

The start to the fifth round of the IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge proved to be eventful heading into Turn 1, and starting almost smack dab in the middle of the packed 52-car field, Gimple was in the thick of it all.

Though the Kansas Speedway roval isn’t known to flatter the Honda Civic Si, Gimple made the most of his car and clicked off fast lap times which saw him consistently moving up the field.

The first of two full-course yellows fell just over 13 minutes into the race, and after the short caution period, Gimple capitalized on the restart to gain two positions. Just past the half-hour mark, Gimple progressed into the top-10 and ultimately worked his way all the way up to seventh position before pitting under green for a routine pit stop.

Gimple managed to keep his nose clean and steer clear of any contact and delivered track position and a well-conserved car as he handed the car over to Eversley in prime condition.

"The start was crazy with people going left and right and hitting each other,” said a pleased Gimple after the finish.

“All I wanted to do was keep all four corners clean and I was able to do that and handed it over to Ryan. The gearbox gremlins just didn't help us today. I was driving my hardest, but the way the restart and all the cars just laid out I had no drafting partner so I was just out there running laps by myself. The only draft I'd get was GS cars coming by. It's good to get the fourth, but we almost had third! Espenlaub got us right at the finish line. We battled with a gearbox issue in the race. It wouldn't go into sixth gear. We had been having gearbox issues all weekend. During qualifying yesterday, it was really hard to get into fifth and sixth. Getting into fifth was easier today. It slowly started to get worse going from 5-6. We lost third because of it, but we're going to Watkins Glen with this momentum and we're strong there so we'll see how it goes.”

As Eversley ran in podium contention through the closing stages of the race, a battle on the final lap saw the No. 75 Honda Civic fighting for the third position. But the gearbox issue did not help in the final run to the finish line and Charles Espenlaub got by at the checkered flag and the Compass360 team took fourth and a healthy haul of championship points.

Gimple will be back in racing action in just two short weeks as the IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge series heads to Watkins Glen for the sixth round of competition on June 28.
