Ombra Racing Add Win And Second Place To Their GT Open Tally In Portimao

A win for the #63 Ferrari driven by Stefano Costantini and Alan Sicart and a second place finish for Stefano Gattuso and Mario Cordoni on #62: that was Ombra Racing's amazing tally in Portimão, the track that hosted the second round of the 2014 International GT Open season. On the Portuguese venue the team managed by Davide Mazzoleni shone both in Race 1 and Race 2 thanks to breath-taking performances from their line-ups.

Costantini-Sicart were the stars of the Saturday race: after starting from 7th spot on the GTS grid, Sicart delivered an amazing recovery drive and a few bold overtaking moves to bring the red-blue Ferrari 458 to 3rd place at the end of his stint. Then Costantini did the rest: the quickest car in the GTS field by a great margin, Stefano was able to reduce the gap from the frontrunners steadily and took the lead with 20 minutes to go. Doing so, the talented driver from Rome overcame brilliantly a 10" handicap that the team had to serve during the pit-stop, a consequence of the podium finish clinched in the second race of the Nürburgring round.

Under GT Open's performance compensation rules, #63's Race 1 win meant that Costantini-Sicart were handed an even bigger handicap for the Saturday race, a staggering 25" second hold in the pits. With such a big penalty weighing on one car, the team had to rely on the #62 alone for a podium finish, and Mario Cordoni and Stefano Gattuso were ready and up to the task: starting from last row on the grid after a difficult qualifying session, Cordoni passed two rivals with a perfect getaway, and then kept P8 in Class for the rest of his stint before handing his car to Gattuso. In what was undoubtedly the most amazing peformance of the weekend, Stefano upped his pace to high 49s/low 50s and doing so he quickly got hold of the competition. Once he got on their back, Gattuso overtook six cars in ten laps to finish in second place, just 2" adrift of the GTS race winner.

Portimao's amazing performance gave Costantini-Sicart 2nd place in the Drivers Standings, with Ombra Racing second as well in the Teams classification.

Davide Mazzoleni (Team Manager): "Last year only a tyre puncture in Monza had robbed us of a deserved second GT Open win, so I'm really happy that we managed to hit back on bad luck so early in this 2014 season. The team did an amazing job, and the same must be said of our drivers: we gave them very competitive machinery, but they made the most of the potential with error-free drives, detailed feedback that helped the engineers in their setup choices and a good attitude, with the right mix of pace and aggressiveness. Three podium finishes in the first two GT Open weekends clearly prove that the development work we carried out last winter is paying dividends, but we are not going to stop with it. Every time we get on track we find something more, so I'm sure there's even more to come".
