Solid Sardinia Provides Production Victory For Dmack

DMACK endured a difficult Rally Italia Sardegna as the rough gravel stages across the Mediterranean island proved a real test for its gravel tyres on round six of the FIA World Rally Championship. However, despite an array of technical problems forcing a number of its top WRC 2 crews to retire on the opening day, the event still proved positive with a second consecutive victory in the Production Cup.

DMACK’s hopes for success were led by Estonian Ott Tänak in the Drive DMACK World Rally Team, but he was sidelined on the opening day with a series of technical and mechanical issues. His Autotek-run Ford Fiesta R5 re-started on day two and he eventually came home with eighth place after setting a number of fastest times when luck eventually swung his way.

Reigning Production Cup champion Nicolas Fuchs was less fortunate. The Peruvian never even tasted the Sardinian gravel stages after a terminal engine problem forced him to retire after leaving service on Friday morning. Meanwhile Quentin Gilbert and Egon Kaur were setting solid times in WRC 2 before the demanding stages once again took their toll – dropping them both down the timesheets.

But Argentine Juan Carlos Alonso upheld DMACK’s honour as he romped to a second successive victory in the Production Cup – followed home swiftly by another DMACK runner in the form of Ramon Torres from Chile.

DMACK’s DMG+2 gravel tyre was able to hold its own on the arduous stages. The Sardinian surface was initially loose and soft but quickly rutted on the second pass, exposing piercing rocks to catch out the unwary who strayed off line. It also featured a number of abrasive bedrock stages, which, compounded with the high ambient temperatures over the weekend, ensured some of the most demanding conditions for DMACK to conquer.

DMACK had nominated its S3 hard compound which was able to provide the ideal mix of durability, puncture resistance and performance – allowing competitors to set fastest times in the WRC 2 category. But the rough conditions caused many problems, with the lead changing hands five times as drivers were hampered with mechanical issues and accidents over the weekend.

The Italian round of the world championship featured a new base at Alghero in the north-west of the island. However, many of the traditional punishing stages were retained and were still in a rough state from the previous event. The rally kicked off on Thursday evening with a trip to the southern coastal town of Cagliari for a street stage which drew thousands of spectators and proved to launch the high-energy event in style.

The main action took place to the east of Alghero as crews tackled the gravel mountain tracks over three days featuring rocky roads and hot temperatures.

Dick Cormack, DMACK motorsport director, said: “While we didn’t come away with a reasonable overall result in WRC 2, we were happy and encouraged with how our hard compound gravel tyre stood up to the conditions in Sardinia. These are some of toughest roads in the series and, with victory in the Production Cup and a number of fastest times, we proved both the performance and durability is there. It’s only by competing on these difficult rallies that you can really pick up the technical knowhow to progress and we are beginning to reap the rewards from the last few seasons.”
