B63 Driver Boschung Racks Up Austrian Rostrum Treble

Ralph Boschung made it a hat-trick of podium finishes in round four of the 2014 ADAC Formel Masters at the Red Bull Ring this weekend (June 6-8) after fine performances in all three races.

A second and two thirds – the latter after overcoming a mid-race incident – made Austria’s 4.326km grand prix venue the backdrop to Boschung’s finest weekend of the season to date.

The 16-year-old remained a fixture in the top-three throughout a blisteringly hot Styrian weekend and was set for a promising qualifying session after finishing second in Friday practice. However, a mistake at the final corner would ultimately see him line up third, albeit as the highest placed LOTUS driver, for the first race on Saturday afternoon.

A fantastic start immediately helped him threaten championship leader Mikkel Jensen, although steering issues resulting from first-lap contact would subsequently hinder his victory hopes. Despite that setback Ralph still rallied to come home second, only 1.369secs behind the Neuhauser Racing driver.

Another tremendous start to the weekend’s second race on Sunday morning gave Boschung an early lead. However, Jensen and Maximilian Gunther’s pace proved slightly too much, enabling them to eventually pass after another close contest that saw just 1.116secs cover the podium trio.

That resulted in Boschung lining up sixth on the reverse grid for Sunday’s final race in which a superb display of overtaking and determination helped cement third by the chequered flag.

He was initially forced to take avoiding action around the outside of turn two when Jensen’s attempted pass resulted in a lock-up. But after inheriting second place as a result, the Swiss was then instructed to yield the position for disobeying track limits, at which point Gunther also snuck through.

However, a stunning three-car pass into the downhill turn three on Gunther, Kim Luis Schramm and Fabian Schiller helped Ralph reclaim third by the finish and ensure two LOTUS drivers again shared the podium.

“I’m delighted with such a great showing in Austria on a circuit where it’s difficult to find the limit,” said Boschung. “We’ve worked hard on the set-up this weekend so the car felt really good. However, without my mid-race steering problems in race one I could have probably challenged for victory. Nevertheless, I’m still extremely happy with finishing on the podium in each race, and we’re already thinking about chasing that first win at the next round.

“Although the car felt excellent, everything didn’t quite go to plan during race two for some reason, so to finish one second behind was promising. I didn’t fully understand why I had to give the position back, although it was very satisfying to charge through the field. Without this, Joel [Eriksson] and myself could have secured a one-two for LOTUS. Still, it feels terrific to be fighting with the championship leaders, so that gives us tremendous confidence going forward.

“As always I’d like to thank my partners Petrol Energy, B63, Hublot, Avanthay&Partners, and Audi for their continued support. It means a lot and hopefully we can continue this form at the Slovakiaring.”

Round five of the ADAC Formel Masters takes place in Slovakia on August 8-10.
