Strong Points Scoring Weekend For Tan In Austria

Malaysian Weiron Tan competed this weekend in the third round of the 2014 ATS Formel 3 Cup with Van Amersfoort Racing, with the championship visiting Red Bull Ring in Austria. He scored his best results to date, with a brace of fourth places.

After a challenging season so far, Weiron was able to make his most promising start to a weekend in Austria when he recorded fourth in practice and then went onto secure a second row start from third for both the first and third races of the weekend in a strong qualifying session.

Weiron made a good start in race 1 and was in second place for several laps, closing on in the leader, but unfortunately things went wrong when he was went off track and then was handed a drive through penalty. In the end he was classified tenth and his result in the first race left him with work to do in Saturday afternoon’s second race, which he started from 10th on the fifth row.

Race two began well for the 19-year-old, with Weiron immediately on the pace and able to move up from his tenth place starting slot to sixth within two laps. Over the opening laps he diced for position and, by lap seven, had made his way up to fourth, consistently setting fastest sectors over his competitors. He began to gain time on third placed championship leader Markus Pommer, but with the race at just 14-laps, he maintained fourth to the chequered flag.

Starting from third in the final race behind Pommel and Sam MacLeod, Weiron started well and maintained third until lap 2, when he lost position to Nabil Jeffri and Indy Dontje, moving into fifth. Late in the race MacLeod was handed a drive-through penalty, promoting Weiron to fourth.

After nine races, Weiron is currently sixth in the championship with 51 points and maintains fourth in the rookie classification. The championship returns to Germany for rounds 10, 11 and 12, which will take place at Hockenheimring on 14-15 July.

Weiron Tan: “This weekend at Red Bull Ring was a step forward for us. We showed that we have the potential and speed to run at the front. It should have been podium finishes for us this week but, no matter, it’s the progress we made that counts. I’ve learned a lot from this weekend and I’m going to continue to work and fight even harder. The guys at Van Amersfoort did a fantastic job so thank you to them for that. We will work hard together as a team to make sure we win races!”
