2014 Michigan: Clint Bowyer NASCAR Sprint Cup Race Preview

The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series circuit travels to Michigan International Speedway for a 400-mile race this weekend. One lucky driver will be able to give his or her father a special gift after the event, which falls on Father’s Day.

While Clint Bowyer’s dad, Chris “Pops” Bowyer, has witnessed his son rewarded with a trophy after numerous racing events, it’s safe to say watching his son win this weekend would be especially gratifying.

Bowyer and his No.15 5-hour ENERGY Toyota team have been close several times this year, including California and Martinsville. Most recently, Bowyer has been rattling off some strong finishes. He was on his way to a top-5 finish last weekend when a competitor lost an engine on the final restart and shuffled him back with 12 laps to go, finishing 11th. And in Dover, Bowyer finished fourth after having a strong Toyota all race.

The team also tested at the 2-mile track located in the Irish Hills of Michigan. Bowyer has finished in the top-10 in half of the 16 races in which he has competed as well. With a busy weekend ahead, Bowyer knows that winning on Sunday means he wouldn’t have to do much Father’s Day shopping for Pops. He’d be perfectly happy with his son getting a trophy in victory lane.

Is Michigan a driver’s track or all about the cars?
“Michigan might be the farthest from a driver’s race track of any of them. It just has such a tremendous amount of speed and aero dependency and if your car is good then you’re going to be good. We were good in a tire test and I’m looking forward to getting back there and see how things go in the race weekend.”

Does Father's Day take on a special meaning with you about to become a father?
“It's kind of weird to think about it to tell you the truth. It's exciting but I still kind of look at Father's Day as all about my dad. It's always been about Pops. He's been such an important part of my life and has helped me so much. I still think it's going to be about him even when I'm a dad. It's just the way it's always been. I'm sure that will change but that's just the way it seems now.”

Chassis No. 813 serves as the primary chassis for Bowyer at Michigan International Speedway. It’s a new chassis for the 2014 season and finished 17th at Charlotte in May. Chassis No. 804 serves as the back-up chassis. This chassis finished 15th at Bristol and 12th at Darlington earlier this year.

· One top-five and eight top-10 finishes in 16 starts
· Completed 3,090 of 3,139 laps (98.4%) of competition and has led 27 laps
· Average start 18.4 and average finish 15.4
· One DNF (did not finish) - August 2006
