The Gateway Arch Awaits Mason Mingus; Win-Tron Racing

For the first time in four years the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) will return to the City of the Gateway Arch and visit Gateway (Ill.) Motorsports Park (GMP) for Saturday night’s running of the Drivin’ For Linemen 200.

For Sunoco rookie of the year Mason Mingus and his Win-Tron Racing team, they head to Gateway Motorsports Park hoping for some luck and a breakthrough performance in their No. 35 Call 811 Before You Dig Toyota Tundra.

Fast trucks and a blossoming driver have unfortunately been unable to conquer rotten “racing luck”, which included last week’s WinStar World Casino & Resort 400, where Mingus battled back from a subpar qualifying performance to storm his way into the top-15, only to become a victim of another driver’s miscue and erase a potential top-10 finish. Still, the Mooresville, North Carolina-based team was able to salvage a 19th-place finish.

Moving on from Texas, the team turns their attention to the 1.25-mile track of GMP, where they hope Mingus’s short track skills will shine and turn what has been a frustrating freshman year into some positive momentum moving forward into the long summer stretch.

“I’m ready, so bring on Gateway,” said Mingus. “With the track shape, it throws some speedway characteristics as well as some short track style, which is my background so I’m anxious to get in our No. 35 Call 811 Before You Dig Toyota Tundra and go to work.”

While some of the series’ competitors will make their NCWTS debuts at the track on Saturday night, Mingus is hoping that the five hours’ worth of practice on Friday and Saturday morning will play into his hands and they can get a good direction for their truck for the seventh race of the season.

“Without reservation, the extra track time will help a bunch, especially for us, a rookie team,” added Mingus. “I’ve never been to Gateway before, so my first laps on Friday will be pretty “green”, but I’m hoping we’ll be able to adapt to the track quickly and then focus on race runs.

“I think track position will be important on Saturday night, so starting up front will only help us in our battle to get our second top-10 finish of the year. I’ll admit, I’m still adjusting to this new knockout qualifying, but over the next couple of races, I think you’ll see some steady progress that will put us in a better position come go time.”

Nate Thiesse, co-truck owner of Win-Tron Racing offered his insights on this weekend’s activities.

“We’re hopeful for a strong weekend,” he said. “I think that Gateway is a track that fits Mason’s driving style and the guys on the Win-Tron Racing team have been working hard to make sure we have an ultra-fast No. 35 Call 811 Before You Dig Toyota Tundra for Saturday’s race. Patience and even strategy could be a factor on Saturday night, but whatever task awaits us, we’ll be ready and hope to end this streak of misfortune.”

Mingus’s No. 35 Call 811 Before You Dig Toyota Tundra is chassis No. 46, a brand new truck that has never competed.

Entering Gateway, Mingus sits 16th in the championship standings, 45 markers from 10th place held by Joey Coulter. Mingus unofficially sits second in the Sunoco rookie of the year standings, behind current leader Ben Kennedy.

The Drivin’ For Linemen 200 is the seventh of 22 races on the 2014 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series schedule. The event will be televised live on FOX Sports 1 on Saturday night, June 14 beginning at 7:00 p.m. The green flag is scheduled to drop shortly after 7:30 p.m. All times Central.
