Last-Minute Rally Extends Mcclelland's Time At Bassfest

Despite a large deficit early on at Chickamauga Lake, pro angler Mike McClelland fought his way back to make the top 10 on Last Chance Friday and continue his time at Bassmaster BASSfest in Dayton.

With only 20 pounds, 3 ounces after the first two days, the Cabela's/GEICO For Your Boat Elite angler's luck changed when it mattered most. But McClelland believes that his 13-12 bag Friday was no coincidence but a result of good fortune.

"My philosophy is what comes around goes around. Around 2 p.m. I bumped into Todd Faircloth, one of my good friends, on the water. He had broken down and asked me if I could bring him in. He was due in at 3 p.m. and I wasn't due until 4:45 p.m. Essentially, I cut my day short by 45 minutes the very first day even though I was struggling myself.

"I felt like Friday was my payback for helping him out because I actually caught my best fish today at 2:02 p.m. when I had to be in just 13 minutes later. That 4-pounder was the only reason I made the cut and I feel like I was very blessed to find it. I honestly believe that things happen for a reason and like it's meant to be that I made the top 10 today."

Hopefully, McClelland's good luck will continue to turn around when he launches from Point Park with the rest of the top-60 anglers at 7 a.m. ET on Saturday and Sunday. Weigh-in for BASSfest will also be held at Point Park at 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

"I really felt like after both practices that if I had the opportunity get five similar bites I would have almost 20 pounds," McClelland said. "Day 1 just never jived for me though. It's one of those things that you just scratch your head and question over and over again. I feel like I fished a lot of the right spots at the wrong times Wednesday. While Thursday, I caught my 16-11 off the very same spots.

"I really took a lot of chances on second-chance Friday," McClelland said. "I started really shallow and caught one good fish on my second cast of the day. I made a decision at that point to go fish deep. I spent four and a half hours fishing deep and never had a bite. With not much time left, I just started fishing anything that looked good. I pulled up to one specific dock and I caught three keepers and a 4-pounder."
