Bayne's Blue Ford Fusion To Start 23rd At Michigan

Bayne's Blue Ford Fusion To Start 23rd At Michigan

Trevor Bayne, driving the No. 21 Ford Fusion decked out in the blue and white colors of sponsor Quick Lane Tire & Auto Center, made it to Round 2 of knockout qualifying at Michigan International Speedway on Friday and thereby earned the 23rd starting spot for Sunday’s Quicken Loans 400.

Team co-owner Eddie Wood said his team’s Ford Fusion, which also carries the usual Motorcraft logos, was faster than in practice, but a little too tight during qualifying.

Bayne’s best lap in practice was at 198.402 miles per hour, and his official qualifying lap was at 199.518 mph.

"The most important thing is that we made the race," Wood said. "And we made it through the first round of qualifying."

Bayne was 13th fastest in the opening round with a lap at 201.472 mph.

"We were able to pick up pretty good our second run during that first session," Bayne said. "But unfortunately that got all of the good out of the tires having to do two runs."

He said that NASCAR’s limitations on changes to the car during knock-out qualifying prevent teams from making major changes during the qualifying session.

"There was nothing we could do here on pit road with the small adjustments we’re allowed to make to free it up on entry [to the corners], and we really just kind of freed up the exit that last run," he said. "We’d love to qualify better, but we do get to race here.

Wood said he’s upbeat about his team’s prospects for Sunday’s 400 miler, given the Motorcraft/Quick Lane team’s preparation for it.

"We tested here earlier this year, and worked mostly on race setups," he said. "We should be OK."

After two practice sessions on Saturday during which the team can do more race set-up work, the focus turns to the Quicken Loans 400, which is set to get the green flag on Sunday just after 1 p.m. with TV coverage on TNT.
