2014 NHRA: Antron Brown NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals Qualifying Report: No. 4

Some teams might be apprehensive about taking a new race car to the track, but that's not how Antron Brown feels when his Matco Tools team led by crew chiefs Brian Corradi and Mark Oswald delivers one to the starting line.

After losing in the first round at the last two NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series events from subpar qualifying positions with a back-up car, Antron earned the No. 4 qualifying spot for Sunday's championship eliminations of the NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals at Bristol Dragway. Antron's first run with the Matco Tools dragster recorded a time of 3.873 seconds at 313.07 mph on Friday afternoon to earn the good qualifying slot.

"That's what we expect with our Don Schumacher Racing dragsters," said Antron, who despite owning 44 NHRA event titles has never left Bristol with an NHRA Wally trophy.

"We have the best fabricators in racing back at the DSR shop and our team knows how to put a car together. We've had some great guys on our Matco Tools teams over the years but I believe this group might be our best."

After Friday's second session was canceled by rain, the team spent Saturday using its two runs under clear skies and a hot track to prepare for similar conditions forecast for Sunday's championship eliminations scheduled to begin at noon (ET).

The new dragster was needed after its primary car was destroyed in a crash four weeks ago at an event near Atlanta. The back-up car had won several titles a year ago but was not able to get past the first round at the last two events.

"We just want to get down the racetrack on the hottest track we've seen this year," Antron said of Saturday's runs. "The car went down the track nice and easy. We just want to pick at it and get ready for tomorrow.

"On that last run, the car just dropped a (cylinder). That's all it was. It was running really well to that point. It was going to run exactly what Brian and Mark wanted it to. So, with that being said, we'll work on it and go after it just like we always do on race day.

"The good part is we qualified well. We're on the top half of the ladder and we get lane choice so we'll go out there and do what we do. It's going to be hot tomorrow, just like it is today, so it's going to be tricky for everybody. But we know how to do tricky. We'll keep our poker hand hidden, for now."

No. 1 Qualifier: Brittany Force (John Force Racing) 3.828 seconds, 317.94 mph

ANTRON BROWN, Matco Tools Top Fuel Dragster
