2014 NHRA: Spencer Massey NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals Qualifying Report: No. 5

Things will get hot on Sunday at Bristol Dragway and that's just fine with Spencer Massey.

The driver of the Battery Extender Powered by Schumacher Top Fuel dragster and Texan knows how to handle a little heat.

"It was hot today (Saturday) and it's supposed to be even hotter tomorrow," Massey said of the 88-degree forecasted temperature for Sunday's 14th annual NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals.

"I'm from Texas, heat doesn't bother me. I actually enjoy it. It's definitely tougher on everyone when it's hot but that's when this Battery Extender team does well so we're excited for race day."

The Battery Extender team led by Phil Shuler and Todd Okuhara can be excited for race day after qualifying No. 5 for Sunday's eliminations, their best qualifying effort since the Las Vegas event in March.

"We didn't get a shot at the track Friday night with the weather (rain) that rolled in but that's OK because we won't be seeing the Friday night conditions on race day. The important runs this weekend were on Saturday and we have data to go off of for race day.

"Our first run on Saturday we probably just pushed it a little too hard but we made a good lap on Friday afternoon and we know what changes we need to make for the lap we made to end qualifying.

"Hopefully Sunday will be a long, hot day that ends in the Thunder Valley Winner's Circle, that's what we're aiming for."

Massey will race Clay Millican in the opening round of Sunday's eliminations that begin at Noon (ET).
