Malaysian Weiron Tan continued his run of strong finishes with two further fourth places at this weekend’s round of the 2014 ATS Formel 3 Cup at the Hockenheimring in Germany.

Racing with the Van Amersfoort Racing team, Tan added a further 21 Championship points to his tally; maintaining P6 in the drivers’ Championship.

Weiron had another solid qualifying session at the 4.5km-long high-speed Hockenheimring, posting times which saw him secure a starting position of P6 for race one and P5 for race three.

Tan lined up on the third row of the grid for race one on Saturday and made a strong start, moving up to P4 in the opening stages of the race. Tan continued to push hard over the course of the 30 minute race, but the positions at the front remained unchanged and Tan crossed the finish line in P4, adding to the two P4 finishes he had secured at the last race weekend in Austria.

Race two on Saturday afternoon was a reverse grid and saw Tan line up in P5. Pole-sitter Nicolai Sylvest had a poor start which allowed Tan up to P3. Tan was running in P3 for almost all of the race but was pipped to the final podium position of the race by Dontje who snatched P3 in the closing minutes of the race, leaving Tan to cross the line in fourth place and pick up a further five championship points.

For the final race of the weekend, Weiron started in P5 but unfortunately was involved in a coming together involving Indy Dontje and Santino Ferrucci on lap one which saw all three drivers forced to pit. As a result, Tan dropped down the field to P10, almost a minute behind the rest of the field. However, undeterred, Tan continued to fight and by the end of the 30-minute race was up to eighth position.

After twelve races, Weiron is currently 6th in the championship with 72 points and 4th in the rookie classification.

Points scored in the first twelve races of the 2014 ATS Formula 3 Cup (top 10):
1 Markus Pommer 218
2 Nabil Jeffri 151
3 Indy Dontje 146
4 Sam MacLeod 129
5 Nicolai Sylvest 85
6 Weiron Tan 72
7 Andrés Méndez 61
8 Nikita Zlobin 45
9 Santino Ferrucci 33
10 Maximilian Hackl 30

The ATS Formel 3 Cup now takes a summer break before the action resumes at the Nurburgring on the 29th and 31st August.

Weiron Tan: “The weekend at Hockenheim saw us struggling with some mechanical issues, however I raced hard but felt like I didn’t receive the reward I deserved. Once again, the team did an incredible job all weekend so it’s a shame not to be coming away with more points.”

“The phase I went through to improve since the beginning of the year was difficult, but I kept positive and now we are much closer to where we should be. The summer break will be the time where I can work hard to prepare well for the next race at the Nurburgring. I’m looking forward to racing there!”
