2014 NHRA: Mountain View Team Making Headway As Summer Looms

It might not be evident simply by looking at the recent results, but the Mountain View Tire & Auto Service NHRA Pro Stock team and driver Vincent Nobile have every reason to think that they’re on the verge of a breakthrough performance.

“Oh it’s coming,” said Nobile. “We’ve been on the verge of something good for a while now; we just haven’t been able to get over the hump. In Pro Stock, these cars are slow close and everyone is so competitive that you need for everything to be just about perfect in order to win. So far, we haven’t had that but I don’t feel like we’re very far off. We really just need a little bit of a break and I’m sure that we’re going to see some better results.”

At last weekend’s NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals at scenic Bristol Dragway, Nobile, like several other racers, had a difficult time getting to the track due to a series of weather-related flight delays. Once he arrived in Bristol, Nobile qualified the team’s KB Racing-powered Chevy Camaro with a 6.644 elapsed time, just two hundredths of a second behind pole-sitter Shane Gray. However, Nobile’s performance was only good for the No. 7 spot in the close field. After beating round one opponent Shane Tucker, Nobile was paired with reigning NHRA Mello Yello Series champion Jeg Coughlin. Nobile ran a competitive 6.703, the third best run of the round, but fell victim to Coughlin’s 6.671, the best of the round.

“That’s sort of been our problem for most of the year,” Nobile said. “Had we run just a few thousands quicker in qualifying, we’d have been three or four spots higher and we wouldn’t have had to run someone like Jeg until the semi’s or the final. Not that anyone else in the field is easy, but in Pro Stock, you generally want to qualify in one of the top four spots in order to get to the final. That’s really not an excuse because we didn’t make a perfect run against Jeg. We could have beaten him but everything would have had to be perfect in order to do it.”

Ten races into the 2014 season and Nobile is ranked No. 6 in the Mello Yello standings and he has an admirable 13-10 record in elimination rounds including six semifinal appearances. Optimism remains high in the Mountain View camp especially since the schedule includes three more races in the next three weeks. From Bristol, the team will travel to Epping, N.H., Joliet, Ill., and Norwalk, Ohio before getting a much-needed break. Nobile is a former winner of the Norwalk event.

“This stretch, where we have four-straight races to start the summer, is really tough on the teams but it also gives us a good opportunity to pick up a win and make a move in the points,” Nobile said. “As drivers, we really love this time of the year because we get an opportunity to make a lot of runs and there is no substitute for seat time. I’d expect everyone in the class to be on top of their game right now.”
