2014 NHRA: Spencer Massey NHRA New England Nationals Event Preview

Spencer Massey is the only Top Fuel driver in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series that has a Wally trophy from New England Dragway in Epping, N.H.

And this weekend during the second annual New England NHRA Nationals, he intends on keeping it that way.

In the inaugural event last season, Spencer and the Battery Extender Powered by Schumacher team qualified No. 5 and captured the event title. It wasn't his first win at the New Hampshire facility; he also won there in 2010 in a different drag racing series.

"I got the first NHRA Wally from Epping and maybe this is selfish but I want the next one too," said Spencer, who has two titles this year. "It would be cool to be the only Top Fuel driver that's won there, so we're going to do what we can to make sure that happens."

The Battery Extender team led by crew chiefs Phil Shuler and Todd Okuhara proved at the previous NHRA Mello Yello event that they have a competitive 10,000-horsepower Top Fuel dragster.

"We have a good car right now," Spencer said. "We just kind of got bit in Bristol without lane choice and our teammate had a great run. We had a great qualifying outing there and that's important.

"In Epping, we'll look to make four consistent qualifying runs so we will have more data for race day. It's important not to get behind in qualifying and be in the top half of the field to get lane choice for Sunday.

"It's a tough track at Epping, for sure. But we did well there last year and we'll try to do the same this year."

The Battery Extender team spent Monday at Bristol Dragway servicing the car before making the trek northeast for this weekend's New England NHRA Nationals.

"The guys were out at the track Monday getting everything serviced and ready to go again. This will be the second race in a four-race swing and we've got a long way to go. We just need to go rounds and get our car more consistent and maybe grab another Wally."

The following are Spencer's statistics and NHRA Top Fuel points standings after 10 Mello Yello series events.
