Huffy Ready For Spa WTCC And 'Ring' 24 Hours Double-Header

Rob Huff will dart between two hallowed motorsporting venues this weekend (21-22 June), as part of an intense double-header encompassing the FIA World Touring Car Championship’s (WTCC) long-awaited return to Belgium’s historic Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps and the ADAC Zurich Nürburgring 24 Hours on the legendary Nordschleife (21-22 June).

Spa-Francorchamps is the final European port of call for the WTCC, which will soon jet off to a series of far-flung destinations in the concluding half of the 2014 season.

The historic venue carves its way through the magnificent scenery of the Ardennes Forest in the Belgian province of Liège and legendary corners like Eau Rouge – the steep left-right-left sweeper with a blind summit – the double-apexed Pouhon and the flat-out Blanchimont turn, all combine to make Spa one of the greatest and most formidable race tracks in the world.

Huff, backed by Canadian laser vision correction specialist, OCC LASIK, achieved a small victory by scoring a point in his LADA Sport LUKOIL team’s home event in Moscow less than a fortnight ago, to the delight of the passionate and patriotic Russian fans, and duly hopes to carry some momentum into the WTCC’s first trip to Spa since its one and only visit to the circuit in 2005.

Incredibly, the majesty of Spa pales into insignificance compared to Huff’s second halt, Germany’s infamous Nordschleife, which holds the 2014 ADAC Zurich Nürburgring 24 Hours this weekend (21-22 June).

Huff returns for a second crack at conquering the twice-around-the-clock enduro and will be reunited with Rotek Racing’s spectacular Audi TTRS Special, some seven months after taking the car to top honours in the 2013 edition of the 25 Hours of Thunderhill – the world’s longest endurance race – in California.

The former World Champion said: “I have a really exciting weekend coming up, as I have the opportunity to race on two of the most iconic racetracks in the world in quick succession. These sort of chances rarely arise, but they’re what you go racing for so I genuinely can’t wait to get underway at Spa-Francorchamps and the Nürburgring Nordscleife.

“First of all, it was great to be able to complete the six-hour qualifying race at the Nürburgring earlier this year and I believe Rotek Racing has all the necessary ingredients to produce a great result in this weekend’s 24 Hours, just as we did in the 25 Hours of Thunderhill in December. It’s always nice to link back up with Robb Holland and Kevin Gleason, especially in Rotek’s Audi TTRS, and I think we can only aim for the outright front-wheel-drive victory.”

Huff continued: “For the WTCC’s Race of Belgium at Spa, I have slightly more modest ambitions, as the length and fast, flowing nature of the circuit is unlikely to favour the LADA Granta TC1. While ORECA has provided the team with very strong engines, our high-drag aero package will hinder us on the long straights and through Spa’s many fast turns, extending the gap to our Citroen, Chevrolet and Honda rivals. We’re praying for rain in this one and the weather is notoriously changeable in the Ardennes Forest. The Granta has proven to be quite effective in tricky conditions and we’ll have a good shot at solid points finishes should the heavens open.”
