Mills Takes Professional Approach to GT Amateur Class Lead

Michael Mills, of Angleton, Texas, is in his first year of Pirelli World Challenge competition, but his years of SCCA club racing and IMSA Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge racing have taught him many lessons about on-track strategy. Even though he turned the fastest GT-A class race lap in his No. 41 EFFORT Racing Porsche 911 GT3 R in the first of two scheduled races at Detroit’s Belle Isle several weeks ago, Mills was at the back of the class at the checkered flag after being caught in a late-race accident. The fastest race lap put him on the GT-A pole for the second Detroit event the following day. Despite the lack of points scored in Race One, Mills still held the GT-A points lead entering the second race on the temporary street circuit. In Race Two, he scored a second place finish and increased his GT-A points lead to 18 points. Mills could have tried a pass on the last lap of green flag racing in Detroit to take the win, but he told the media after the race that he and EFFORT have an eye on the championship. He deemed the move too risky on a narrow street course and opted for the points over the potential short-term glory. Mills clearly has a very professional approach to his pursuit of the GT Amateur championship.

McCall Brings Vast and Varied Experience to Porsche Cayman Program

When looking at the GTSport Racing Porsche Cayman S program in Pirelli World Challenge GTS class, everyone knows that driver Jack Baldwin has more experience than almost anyone on the grid. Many may not know, however, that his teammate, Buz McCall, has an even longer racing history. McCall, 68 years old, has over three decades of racing accomplishments as a driver and as team owner of American Equipment Racing (AER). AER is one of the most successful Trans-Am teams in American motorsports. The Boca Raton, Florida-resident’s long list of accolades began with consecutive Trans-Am championship wins from 1991-1994. From 1991-1996 AER won more races than any other team in the series. In addition to Trans-Am success, AER and McCall placed second in points in the 1994 NASCAR Nationwide Series – then known as the Busch Series. He then carried his team’s accomplishments into NASCAR’S Sprint Cup, known as Winston Cup at the time, until 1998. The operation fielded fan favorite cars still recognizable today with drivers including Todd Bodine and Ted Musgrave.

As a driver, McCall has competed in over 30 professional races and with multiple IMSA victories. His endurance racing partners over the years have included Alex Job (in a Porsche 911 at the Rolex 24 in 1990), Paul Dallenbach, Tommy Kendall, Pancho Carter and Baldwin. 2013 marked his successful return to competition in the Pirelli World Challenge with GTSport Racing.

“Heading to Road America for the first time with our Caymans we are fairly optimistic about our chances. We started the season with a very well built and proven Porsche but as the season has progressed so has our team and effort. I have raced at Road America many times through the years with several podium finishes and, although I love that track, it will pose some real challenges for our RESET-MD Cayman S with the long straights against much more powerful cars in the GTS class. With that being said, we have worked even harder to prepare our Caymans to the highest level and will use the superior handling and aerodynamics of our Caymans to produce a very competitive package we think might just pay off.”
